Job Description

The Division’s Global Production Operations (GPO) department based in Columbus, Ohio, manages all aspects of the editing, production, and web posting of peer-reviewed papers accepted for publication across the journal portfolio. Responding to program growth and industry change, we are recruiting one (1) Technical Editor to join our high-performing team in Columbus.


ACS Technical Editors perform technical editing of manuscripts for publication in our chemistry journals and other products. This is a production editing role for which both quality and quantity standards must be consistently achieved after training is complete.

Primary Daily Tasks

  • Using a value-added and analytical decision-making approach, edit manuscripts ensuring clarity of scientific content.
  • Apply ACS editing style and proofreading for correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and general readability.
  • Edit manuscripts using production-specific tools and XML software.
  • Perform additional responsibilities which may include, but are not limited to, performing and coordinating production-related tasks, communicating with internal colleagues and external customers to resolve problems or questions about manuscripts, and assisting with general journal operation activities as assigned.

Required Skills

In addition to a 4-year degree in a scientific or technical field from an accredited college or university, the following skills are required:

  • Basic knowledge of chemical terminology and procedures
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Proficiency with everyday computer usage and the aptitude to quickly learn and apply off-the-shelf and proprietary software required for the job functions
  • Interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a production environment in which program and individual quantity and quality objectives are measured and monitored
  • Ability to work a full-time, minimum 40 hour per week schedule, Monday through Friday, with the flexibility to work occasional hours over the minimum on an as-needed basis in response to operational requirements

Required Experience

In addition to your resume, your cover letter must address why you are interested in this position and how you have demonstrated the skills listed above through your academic/employment experience.

  • Familiarity with ACS editing style and knowledge of scientific publishing production process are preferred but not required.
  • The equivalent of 1 year of experience reviewing and editing scientific and technical writing in a publishing environment and/or in support of research.

Position Summary

Work Location

This position will be primarily based in the Columbus, OH office. ACS employees can work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working on site three days per week and up to two days remotely. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
