The 11 bed Labor and Delivery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) is the region's high-risk perinatal center delivering over 3200 babies yearly and accepting transfers from the Hampton Roads region, North Carolina, and other surrounding areas. As the only Perinatal ICU unit, SNGH L&D provides comprehensive care to Antepartum, Intrapartum and Postpartum patients with a variety of diagnosis to include heart disease, diabetes, pre-term labor, premature rupture of membranes, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, substance abuse, mental health conditions, and many other comorbidities or complications. SNGH L&D Perinatologists perform a variety of procedures along with cesareans in one of the two operating rooms on the labor floor, such as cerclage placements, and percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling with intrauterine blood transfusions. Many patients are stabilized on L&D and are transferred to our Antepartum unit. Highly coordinated care with a multidisciplinary approach ensures the best outcomes for all our obstetrical patients.

In addition to a first rate heart program, the hospital is home to Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance and several dedicated facilities and specialized services. Sentara Norfolk General also serves as the primary teaching hospital for undergraduate and graduate education for the adjacent Eastern Virginia Medical School
