Job Description
Teacher Assistant is working in a class size of 8:1:2 or 12:1:2 for preschoolers with disabilities from ages three to five years old. The main duties include assisting the classroom teacher with all aspects of classroom functioning, including delivering instruction, taking care of the children and keeping children safe at all times.
Teaching And Educational Responsibilities
  • Be familiar with weekly lesson plans
  • Actively teach and participate during Circle time, Learning Centers, Read Aloud, Gross Motor Activities and Structured Gym
  • Model language & behavior
  • Assist the classroom teacher with all aspects of classroom functioning, including instruction and care of the children, under the general supervision of the Classroom Teacher
  • Consult and interface with administration, support, staff, therapist and other team members
  • Work with students individually, as well as in small and large groups, on instructional activities
  • Actively engage children in the learning process
  • Be aware of educational goals on IEPs for children
  • Verbally interact with children, giving ongoing direction as needed, ask questions, stimulate topic conversation
  • Meet with teacher to discuss student progress
Professional Development
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Attend coaching meetings with school leaders
  • Attend professional development training for improvement and development
Classroom Management
  • Set a positive role model for the children
  • Be Fair: treat children equally
  • Set a Positive Tone: use Positive Reinforcement; positive language; positive praise.
  • Reinforce classroom rules
  • Intervene Early! Do not let negative behaviors escalate
  • Follow behavior treatment plans as outlined during Team Meetings
  • Design and manage an appropriate, safe and healthy learning environment
Safety
  • Maintain safety in the classroom and in the play areas
  • Report on any safety hazards to Administration
  • Do not dismiss the children to anyone who is not on the Emergency Contact list or who does not have proper identification
  • Be aware of when children are out of the classroom and in therapy
  • Maintain the safety & well-being of the children at all times
  • Escort children to & from the bus
Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
  • Toileting of children
  • Cut food in appropriate size for children
  • Assist children with dressing & undressing as needed
  • Check daily, when the children arrive, for parent/guardian correspondence
  • Put school correspondence & other items into the book bag at the end of the day
  • Change diapers & clothing as needed
  • Monitor toilet trained children
  • Remind children to wash hands after toileting
