Job Description

U. S. Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for a Sales & Use Tax Accountant at our Headquarters location in Pittsburgh, PA. This position is well suited for recent graduates who concentrated in the tax area and for those with an accounting or general business background, but others will be considered who have the ability and desire to learn more in tax and accounting. Future growth opportunities are available within the Tax Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research and analyze issues relating to sales and use tax using online research tools.
  • Review capital appropriations and determine taxability of items being purchased.
  • Prepare direct pay permit and exemption certificates for vendors, as requested. Log provided certificates for audit purposes. If necessary, contact vendor for follow up questions.
  • Resolve questions from tax jurisdictions regarding tax return filings.
  • Gather and accumulate data for use in preparing tax returns. Data must be reviewed for reasonableness and completeness with any discrepancies resolved with plant personnel.
  • Assist in processing Oracle reports.
  • Utilize Excel to input tax return data and prepare tax returns.
  • Assist in sales and use tax audits.
  • Prepare and file sales and use and excise tax returns (state, federal, Canadian goods and services tax and other miscellaneous taxes).
  • Work on special projects as needed.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills required.
  • Experience with Oracle a plus but not required.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle competing priorities under pressure while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Prior experience in the sales and use tax area is preferred but not required.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and customer service skills with ability to deal with all levels of the organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business with a concentration in accounting or finance.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently to achieve timely filing of tax returns and resolution of tax inquiries.
