Other Qualifications: This employee must hold a current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Tennessee. Must have five (5) years of recent nursing experience, and (2) years of recent nursing administration experience. Must hold current C.P.R. certification. Must have a serviceable automobile for required travel. Must have good communication skills. Must meet the health and physical requirements. Must have a genuine liking for and ability to work effectively with children.
Physical Demands: Must have and maintain physical, sensory, emotional, and mental abilities necessary for effective communication in person, in writing, and by telephone. Must have good memory; be able to organize thoughts and activities; do basic mathematical computations and articulate clearly. Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends, participate in occasional overnight travel, and provide own transportation during performances of duty. Must be emotionally mature and able to appropriately handle stress.
Essential Job Functions: This employee is responsible for overseeing the district's school health and nursing program in all schools and for providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools. Other essential job functions include:
  • Assist in selection and recommendation of qualified nursing personnel and other health service employees.
  • Establish process for administering medications.
  • Evaluate current standards of school nursing within the district and revising and upgrading them as needed;
  • Develop procedures for other special situations (e.g., child abuse, substance abuse). Develop methods for evaluating school health services programs.
  • Establish office management and procurement and inventory control procedures.
  • Assist Coordinated School Health Supervisor in planning preventive health service activities (e.g., school health screenings).
  • Participate with school administration in planning, implementing, and evaluating school health services. Coordinate program activities with those in the community-health departments, civic organizations, private and voluntary health agencies, etc.
  • Develop/assist in formulation of school health program policies and procedures and selection of school health program activities:
  • Establish procedures for the provision of health counseling.
  • Writing grant proposals, planning and implementing grants as awarded.
  • Plan and promote a comprehensive training and evaluation program for nursing staff
  • Develop policies and procedures for health services staff pertaining to school health services
  • Supervise, coordinate, assist and evaluate school health services staff. Evaluate own performance and appraise performance of the entire staff as a unit. Utilize evaluation findings to increase staff effectiveness.
  • Provide for high quality delivery of school nursing/health services. In accordance with school district policy and procedures
  • Develop procedures for identifying, evaluating, case management and providing appropriate care for chronically ill and/or handicapped students.
  • Coordinate delivery of the school health program to meet the health and safety needs of children;
  • Plan for health examinations and health screenings.
  • Provide channels through which referrals may be made easily and effectively and procedures for staff to follow in assisting students and families to obtain and accept further medical, dental, or other care. Assume overall direction of follow-up activity.
  • Establish procedures for control of infection and communicable disease.
  • Serve as the district's Homebound Coordinator. Work with school administration and teachers on the planning and implementation of homebound services as needed.
  • Work with school administration on the planning and implementation of school level 504 Plans for students and staff as needed.
  • Arrange for necessary facilities, equipment and supplies for health services.
  • Organize and complete required local, state, and national reports related to school health services such as immunization reports.
  • Provide for health service staff in-service training and professional development. Establish channels of communication for health services staff (e.g., monthly reports or meetings).
  • Plan and promote a comprehensive school health program;
  • Assists the school administration in examining health and safety needs of students and school personnel and establishing goals to be met through implementation of the school health program.
  • Establish lines of authority and responsibilities for health services staff.
  • Serve as a liaison and represent the district at local, state and national meetings, conferences, and committees regarding school health services.
  • Assist in school health budget planning and allocation.
Staff Relationship: Reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations
Terms of Employment: Twelve (12) months. Exempt.
