Position Summary

The Laboratory Supervisor position is responsible for supervising, training and coordinating employees in the Laboratory department. The Laboratory Supervisor will foster a positive work environment, modeling professional behavior and driving performance and accountability. Through a balanced approach of safety, quality, delivery, and cost, this role plans and assigns work, implements laboratory procedures, enforces company policies, and recommends department improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

SAFETY

  • Investigate laboratory near misses and accidents, report findings and recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain safe and healthy work environment

QUALITY

  • Understand department standard operating procedures, update procedures due to any changes, and maintain personnel training records
  • Document non-conformances and collaborate with the Quality team on preventative measures

DELIVERY

  • Set daily priorities as needed, adapting staff performance to changing needs of the customers and/or laboratory operations as applicable
  • Ensures that appropriate staffing is assigned to meet daily operational needs

INVENTORY

  • Monitor and maintain inventory for laboratory operation

PRODUCTIVITY

  • Develop test process rates, set performance goals and measure productivity results
  • Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their responsibilities
  • Work with the Quality team to maintain preventative maintenance schedules

CONTINOUS IMPROVEMENT

  • Manage department key performance indicators, including visual controls, communicate status to management, understand problem root cause and execute countermeasures.
  • Expand professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications
  • Recommend improvements to process

EMPLOYEE SUPERVISION

  • Other applicable tasks assigned by the Operations Manager
  • Track employee performance, write employee appraisals and recommend advancement based on merit
  • Interpret and communicate company policies or management direction to employees
  • Maintain timekeeping, track absenteeism and keep personnel records
  • Maintains staffing levels by recruiting, hiring, orienting and training
  • Address questions, issues and concerns to cultivate effective employee relations
  • Provide technical support and act as a resource for departmental staff
  • Ensure employee adherence to company policies and laboratory procedures. Undertake counseling, disciplinary or termination based on situation

Required Experience

  • High proficiency in MS Office and computer skills
  • Bachelors Degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, or relevant discipline
  • Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and the laboratory applications of biology, microbiology, and/or chemistry
  • Ability to prioritize assignments through time management and organization skills
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a laboratory environment
  • High sense of urgency focused on task accomplishment
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Ability to solve practical problems through analytical and decision making skills
  • Must be able to lift 25+ lbs.

Pay range for this opportunity is $64,050 - $84,063. This position is eligible for [BONUS PARTICIPATION] OR a [INSERT COMMISSION RATE RANGE, IF APPLICABLE] commission.


Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.

Full-time Employees will also receive Paid Time Off (PTO) based on years of service and paid Holidays. Part-time employees working 20 or more hours receive a pro-ration of the full-time PTO allocation and paid Holidays based on their standard hourly work week. Full-Time employees are eligible for four weeks of paid parental leave. Part-time employees also receive paid parental leave, pro-rated based on their standard hourly work week.
