Job Description
Position Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the general supervision of the laboratory personnel and the daily operations of the analytical laboratory. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor will also perform high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, interpret and report patient results, and perform quality control and quality assurance procedures while complying with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is the first point of contact for Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLSs) and Laboratory Technicians during laboratory processing and will provide guidance while troubleshooting complex technical and non-technical problems. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor must also act as a liaison between the CLSs and Laboratory Technicians and the Laboratory Management Team.
The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor will also be involved with coaching and mentoring the laboratory staff, building effective teams, managing projects and meeting project deliverables, and understanding and implementing laboratory goals.

Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform administrative duties; including, but not limited to, writing employee performance evaluations and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, non-conformance reports, quality control (QC) forms, and equipment maintenance forms.
  • Ability to work weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • Able to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
  • Review, interpret, and approve patient results as needed.
  • Perform laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to the laboratory's standard operating procedures, as needed.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, blood or blood products and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Able to prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 65% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 35% of a typical working day.
  • Communicate goals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 40% of a typical working day.
  • Manage the testing and validation of new laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and make sound decisions in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible with tasks and schedules.
  • Supervisor staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.
  • Strong communicator with ability to maintain open communication with internal employees, managers and customers as needed.
  • Ability to respond to change with flexibility and to adapt quickly to evolving circumstances.
  • Identify and troubleshoot high complexity problems that adversely affect test performance.
  • Lead inspection preparation activities for all applicable regulatory bodies.

  • Lead the daily operations of the laboratory; including, but not limited to, scheduling, sample workflow management, and providing or coordinating staff training.
  • Apply excellent leadership skills, such as good judgement, sound analysis, and decision making.
  • Apply excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills; including, but not limited to, utilizing various communication channels, such as team meetings and one on ones, proactively communicating team goals and priorities clearly, openly, and objectively, and communicating changes, issues, and challenges in all directions of the organization.

  • Coach and mentor CLSs and Laboratory Technicians by providing guidance, constructive feedback, and assisting with the development of the troubleshooting and judgment skills.
  • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Participate in the management of the department’s training program in collaboration with the education and training Team.
  • Motivate and inspire employees to do their best work through coaching.
  • Participate in the annual performance review process for team members.
  • Provide day-today supervision of laboratory personnel.
  • Apply outstanding organizational skills.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated strong technical skills and professional working knowledge of job and industry.
  • Demonstrated strong laboratory automation skills.
  • 6+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Strong computer skills to include Internet navigation and email usage.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Chemical or Biological Sciences; or Military Education equivalent.
  • Demonstrated outstanding professionalism, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Advanced working knowledge of local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Possession of a valid California CLS license and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong working knowledge in the areas of laboratory technology, management principles, laboratory information system (LIS) management, and workflow needs and capabilities.
  • Experience with laboratory automation.
  • Training in molecular biology techniques.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Experience in high volume laboratory.

Salary Range:
$124,600.00 - $187,000.00
The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan, paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms, conditions, and eligibility requirements of the applicable plans.
