Our Water & Technology GIS Team is seeking a Summer 2023 GIS Analyst Intern to work out of our Knoxville, TN office.

Your Impact

  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Perform GIS database development, qualitative/quantitative analysis, and mapping as a member of various water resources (including floodplain mapping) and environmental services project teams
  • Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.
  • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products (digital and hardcopy) and accompanying reports in accordance with technical guidelines and client needs.
  • Learn basic principles of geospatial technology and application.
  • Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with project team members and other stakeholders to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs.
  • Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources including public domain, field collection, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Support a variety of tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Perform regular quality control checks of GIS Data and non-spatial databases with minimal supervision to ensure data integrity.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Manage individual project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization.
  • The position supports geospatial analysis and mapping on a variety of projects for public and private sector clients, particularly for water resources and environmental sectors.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Basic proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
  • Demonstrated interest in GIS, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Actively enrolled in an accredited geography, cartography, engineering, coastal or marine science, planning, resource management including fish or wildlife, biological, physical, or computer sciences, or related Undergraduate program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Customization of GIS software using Python.
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS software.
  • Experience with FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
  • Experience with municipal stormwater management.
