Take the initial step in your career path though firsthand experience where you will learn more about the practice, Ameriprise Financial, and the ever-changing financial services industry. Help conduct the smooth operation of a fast-paced—and friendly—financial planning office. Work as an employee of an independent advisor franchisee with a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial. Sit in on client meetings, assist with daily business operations, and feel as part of the team.


The Financial Planning Intern supports the many different tasks for which the practice is responsible and ties directly to the overall business plan of the practice. The Financial Planning Intern Assistant allows the advisor the assurance he/she needs to know that his/her practice is being maintained and supported within Ameriprise Financial guidelines.


Responsibilities and Time Allocation – Will change over time to meet the needs of the practice. Includes other duties as assigned by Advisor.


Business Management

  • Create and maintain reports using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Review work methods and procedures for possible quality improvements and efficiencies and implement them when appropriate
  • Perform other allowable duties as assigned by the financial advisor(s)
  • Structure and maintain files in accordance with document retention policies


Administrative assistance

  • Copy and track all client and practice materials
  • Copy, scan, file and shred
  • Assist planning assistant/paraplanners, AFAs as well as advisors
  • Copy, mail and track new business correspondence

  • Client Care

    • Provide support to update and maintain client management system
    • Greet clients upon arrival and extend hospitality to clients


    Client Service

    • Assist with the website, social media, and marketing events
    • Help with calendaring and meeting confirmation emails.
    • Running investment reports and other client meeting documents
    • Placing trades in the market and other client account related activities
    • Following up with the corporate office on client related issues


    Financial Planning

    • Prepare preliminary financial planning documents and review/edit them for accuracy and completeness
    • Prepare meeting materials (applications, prospectuses, etc)
    • Contact clients or prospects to confirm or schedule follow-up appointments, gather any additional information needed and generally maintain contact during the financial planning process
    • Monitor economy, markets, and world events to support advisor in determining any required strategic rebalancing
    • Enter data using Financial Planning Tool Suite and review and edit as required
    • Review and update client information as needed for client review meetings
    • Prepare correspondence and agreements for advisor/client signatures


    Meeting Preparation and Follow-up

    • Run research and portfolio reports
    • Develop appropriate product deliverables
    • Prepare charts, graphs, tables and other visual aids to be used in implementation meetings with clients using Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well as proprietary software.
    • Data entry into financial planning and analysis software
