Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Student Intern.
In this role, the successful candidate Reporting to the Communications and Marketing team the Communications Intern contributes to and supports a strategic communications program designed to enhance and protect the reputation of the brand and which supports and highlights the Institutions mission and vision to be a world-class, patient-centered, integrated academic medical center. The intern assists the team across the full range of public relations, media and communications activities relating to the business of the Medical Center including researching issues, monitoring media, drafting press materials and pitching media, as needed. The candidate does not serve as spokesperson for the organization.
Time management, critical thinking skills, the ability to work well in a team setting, initiative and flexibility are all important in this role. This person needs to have enthusiasm and the drive to succeed as well as a passion for health care and being in an academic medical center setting. The ability to work quickly, efficiently and have excellent writing, computer and organizational skills are a must.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain media contact lists through media specific software, (Meltwater)
  • Draft press releases, holding statements, talking points, Q&As, bio materials, social media copy, web site copy, and other materials as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work closely with team to organize and staff media on interviews/filming on-site as necessary
  • Prepare reports and maintain documentation regarding media relations activities consistent with Office policy and procedures (e.g., Meltwater, JungleMail, Inside Health)
  • Assist team on website activities including helping with social media posts across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter; brainstorm new ideas
  • Assist in the implementation of a strategic communications program in support of Institutional strategic priorities, long-term goals and objectives relating to media relations, institutional initiatives and special projects
  • Assist with writing and production of NYU Langone Health In The News Report
  • Help identify and pitch topics/experts for news stories
  • Research health issues in the news and associated reporters who cover varied health areas. Prepare messaging, pitch letters and other documents as needed

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a General
1. Working towards a bachelors degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, science, English or communications
2. Some familiarity with marketing, public relations or communications
3. Understanding and ability with social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.). Strong skills in this area a plus.
4. Proven track record of school success
Media Relations/Institutional
1. Knowledge and strong interest in media
2. Ability to identify news worthiness of issues and gauge appropriateness of topics for coverage in specific media outlets
Personal Skills
1. Excellent writing and editing skills a must
2. Enthusiastic, proactive, high energy personality
3. Able to juggle multiple projects and follow through to completion; a problem-solver
4. Strong oral and interpersonal communications skills
5. Shows excellent judgment
6. Professional presence and demeanor

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $15.00 - $18.50 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
