The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Structural Detailer (Transportation Specialist Senior or Advanced) vacancy in the Bureau of Structures!

This full-time position will be headquartered in Madison, WI.

Position Summary


This position is responsible for the drafting of WisDOT structures contract plans using CADDS equipment. This consists of preliminary and final structure plans for projects up to complex highway structures, including but not limited to new and rehabilitated bridges, curved and skewed bridges, bridges on tangent, pedestrian bridges, structural repairs, box culverts, retaining walls, sign bridges and other highway related structures.

This position gathers, analyzes, and utilizes the information necessary to determine and develop the required details and layouts for contract plans. Information not provided with the design engineer’s sketches may be included in the WisDOT Bridge Manual, Standard Details, Standard Insert Sheets, Structure Survey Reports, Subsurface Exploration Reports, Existing Structure Plans, and other references. It is the responsibility of this position to inquire with engineer to obtain any information not provided in the sketches or included in reference materials.

This position also serves an important role in the Quality Assurance of the development of WisDOT structures contract plans. This position reviews the details provided by the engineer and verifies the biddability and constructability of the plan set. This position also requires knowledge of construction practices as it pertains to transportation structures.

This position must effectively communicate as a member of a team with other technicians, specialists, engineers, and supervisors to facilitate final structure plan production.

Salary Information


The Senior level is in schedule-range 14-14 with an annual salary of $52,000 to $63,440, plus excellent benefits.

The Advanced Level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $56,160 to $76,960, plus excellent benefits.

A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


WisDOT does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process. For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, Wisconsin residency is not required. However, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may at times need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications


Qualified applicants at the Senior level will have experience with all the following:

  • Examples include but are not limited to Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, and Bentley MicroStation.
  • Experience producing products with Computer Aided Design and Drafting Software (CADDS).
    • Examples include but are not limited to Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, and Bentley MicroStation.
  • Experience reading and interpreting structure construction plans.

In addition to the above, qualified applicants at the Advanced level will have the following:

  • A minimum of two years of professional experience with CADDS.
