Brief Position Overview


Join the MSU -Northern retail team as a part-time storekeeper in our Books ’N Beans store. The position offers full, employer paid employee health benefits, paid vacation and sick leave, holidays, and a retirement plan.


This position is responsible for supporting operations in Books ‘N Beans, the MSU -Northern Bookstore. Duties include stocking, inventory, cashiering, web order processing, and customer service. This position will serve under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Students ( ADOS ) for Retail & Finance as a member of the larger Retail & Finance team, providing some additional support to other staff within the department, as directed.

Position Details


General Statement


This position is responsible for supporting operations in Books ‘N Beans, the MSU -Northern Bookstore. Duties include stocking, inventory, cashiering, web order processing, and customer service. This position will serve under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Students ( ADOS ) for Retail & Finance as a member of the larger Retail & Finance team, providing some additional support to other staff within the department, as directed.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provide exceptional customer service at all times, responding to customer calls, emails, and in person requests quickly and respectfully.
  • Process web and phone orders daily.
  • Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold drinks, to include delivering drink orders on and off-campus, as needed.
  • Adjust inventory arrangements regularly to ensure stocked shelves and racks, as well as an attractive and varied aesthetic. Communicate any shortage of merchandise immediately to the ADOC for Retail & Finance.
  • Process payments for all store sales, utilizing a networked point of sale ( POS ) register that accepts multiple forms of payment (cash, check, card, account, etc.). Assist the ADOS for Retail & Finance with the processing, balancing, and depositing of daily receipts.
  • Assist with inventory management, checking-in, securing, storing, scanning, and stocking all inventory.
  • Clean store spaces as needed (vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash bins, keep store and office area tidy, etc.).


Secondary Duties Assigned To This Position


  • Some evening and weekend work.
  • Train and assist student staff.
  • Assist with cross-training other Retail & Finance, Business Services, or other Student Affairs staff.
  • Process returns according to vendor policy.
  • Assume operational responsibility for Books ‘N Beans in the absence of the Assistant Dean of Students for Retail & Finance.
  • Maintain inventory of bookstore and report discrepancies to Assistant Dean of Students for Retail & Finance. Assist with annual inventory assessment.


Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent


Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Good organization and priority skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Experience working on a college campus
  • Experience in a retail environment, with preference given to those who have experience working with books, coffee or food service, or apparel
  • Knowledge of Winprism Database
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience working in a team setting with cross-training in multiple areas
