Job Description

Job Summary

The Sterilization Technician is responsible for collecting used and contaminated equipment, instruments and supplies for sorting and decontamination. Cleaning supplies of contaminants, removing waste matter and operating and maintaining decontamination equipment. Preparing and packing decontaminated supplies for sterilization.

Position Description

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Respect patient confidentiality.
  • Comply with federal and state regulations (OSHA, HIPAA, DPH, AAMI, ANSI) and local standards.
  • The environment calls for constant communication between the two sides of Sterilization. All Sterilization Technicians are expected to conduct quality control on each other’s tasks and provide constructive real-time feedback to ensure all is handled to the utmost standards. All in all, this is an environment of real-time feedback and proactivity.
  • As part of a team, constantly utilize the axiUm Dispensary module to check out and check in instruments-alerting manager and IT of any issues.
  • Label cassettes and instruments as needed.
  • Wash, bag, and sterilize dental instruments for the Harvard Dental Center.
  • Master knowledge of sterilization supplies, cassettes, and eqiupment in stock-being able to direct students with their needs, as needed.
  • Be highly productive to ensure continuity with staggered schedules/shifts.
  • Consistently interact with faculty, staff, and students in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Master basic functions of state-of-the art washer and autoclaves and run and record daily and weekly tests.
  • Be responsible for the ongoing organization and quality/control aspects of sterilization.
  • Throughout the day, pick up dirty instruments and drop-off/organize clean instruments.
  • Operate washer and autoclaves with little to no supervision.
  • Demonstrate competency in medical emergency scenarios.
  • Provide customer service to student providers retrieving supplies throughout the day.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with an evolving workplace, improving oneself, and performing new duties.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check at hire.
  • High school graduate or equivalent

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • A certified Sterilization Technician and/or trained Dental Assistant, with a minimum of one year of experience in laboratory work, is preferred.
  • Flexibility with schedule is ideal.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with others.
  • Experience working in a sterile processing department is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in using a computer and being comfortable barcoding and keeping track of instruments.
  • Displays a team player approach and has a professional and respectful attitude.
  • Committed to providing excellent customer service.
  • Working knowledge of utilizing all types of dental instrumentation and cassettes, handpieces, and small dental equipment.
  • A desire to learn and grow is preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Physical requirements include: Ability to lift up to and no more than 50 lbs. worth of weight and push no more than 200 lbs. of weight using a cart.

Working Conditions

  • The primary work location for this position is Boston, MA. In-person on-campus work will be required. In order to be on Harvard payroll, you must reside in one of the following states – CA (exempt employees only), CT, GA, IL, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VT, VA, WA.
  • Work Is performed in and office/clinical setting.

Compensation Range (hourly rate): Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity. Generally new hires can expect compensation between the minimum and midpoint of the range.

  • For HDC positions: This role will be based at either the HDC Longwood or Cambridge location but may require or be schedule at either location as business needs dictate.
