Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment, the Statistician reports to the Director of the Office for Data Insights (ODI), working within a broader framework of areas that include the Center for Integrated Research Computing (CIRC), Office of Institutional Research (OIR), and University Information Technology (UIT). ODI is responsible for providing advanced analytics, including modeling and simulation, to provide leadership with the information and insights required to make evidence-based decisions. As a member of this team, the Statistician plays a vital role in analyzing and interpreting data, conducting statistical research, and providing actionable insights to support critical institutional initiatives.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Explores novel methods of collecting data and develops recommendations that may result in the optimization of existing processes.
  • Designs and implements statistical models and methodologies to analyze complex data relating to all facets of the institution. Manages these studies from start to finish, including data collection, data preparation, statistical analysis including the use of sampling techniques, presentation of results, and integration of results into final reports or publications.
  • Mentors and guides ODI student interns to provide a representation of practical applications within the discipline, including training and orientation, project guidance, and encouragement to think critically.
  • Conducts ad hoc analyses that address critical business questions and provides recommendations to the team.
  • Provides statistical consultation and support to ODI team members. Collaborates within the team and with other reporting areas to develop predictive models and algorithms that support ODI goals.
  • Stays abreast of emerging statistical techniques, methodologies, and tools applicable to higher education.
  • Derives insights and analytical narratives from data and visualizations for effective storytelling and clear communication in response to research questions.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2-3 years of related experience required;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex statistical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders required.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Experience working with R, including report production using R Markdown/Quarto required.
  • Ability to independently learn new statistical and computational methods required.
  • Strong foundational experience in statistical concepts and methodologies, including regression analysis, time series analysis, multivariate analysis, and experimental design preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Engineering required
  • A consultative skillset including the ability to cultivate productive relationships with individuals and departments across the university required.
  • Experience in a higher education setting preferred.
