Position Overview

This Stationary Engineer operates and maintains all buildings and equipment at Logan Correctional Center. The individual in this role will direct stationary fireman, schedule building repairs and shutdowns, and prepare mechanical reports. The ideal candidate will test and record tests for water used and provide assistance in planning the institutional budget. This position will also maintain facility generators and HVAC equipment. Job Responsibilities

  • Schedules building repairs and shutdowns to ensure a maximum operation and the least possible emergency situations due to the shutdowns.
  • Directs the work of fireman in the installation, alternation, repair, maintenance and operation of boilers, furnaces, stokers, blowers, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, and turbines.
  • Serves as designated lead worker.
  • Prepares mechanical reports and reviews and prepares daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Operates, administers, and maintains the Power Plant equipment under direct supervision of the Chief Stationary Engineer.
  • Remains up-to-date with all Department Rules, Administrative and Institutional Directives, and Institutional Policies and Procedures.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of supervision directing the work of employees and/or individuals engaged in maintenance operation.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of work experience troubleshooting and maintaining HVAC equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year experience with repair and/or construction of buildings and/or equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience with the operation of electrical generating equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience preparing reports for review.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
