Job Description
General Purpose:
Performs testing procedures on patient blood, body fluid and tissue samples according to the accepted standards of pathology practice, and the policies and procedures of the contracting employer. Maintains equipment and appropriately uses supplies.
Essential Functions:
  • Applies basic math to job situations (e.g. combining mixtures, machine settings).
  • Provides legible, clear written or electronic documentation of all test results.
  • Establishes effective relationships with physicians, coworkers and superiors.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with contracting employer’s policies and procedures.
  • Reads and interprets policy and procedure manuals, written physician’s orders, equipment operating instructions and safety manuals.
  • Operates equipment and devices according to the manufacturer’s operating instructions and the contracting employer’s policies and procedures.
  • May assist the Pathologist with complex and invasive laboratory procedures as assigned and qualified.
  • May have access to personal health information (“PHI”) necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities. Access to use and ability to disclose PHI is further defined by each organization/department.
  • Completes other assignments as requested and assigned.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment (cleaning, calibrating, repairing) and completes all required paperwork.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies, and takes appropriate action to retest and/or report per the policies of the contracting employer.
  • Immediately communicates critical test results to physicians and/or nurses in accordance with the policies of the contracting employer.
  • Prepares specimens for a wide variety of common and specialized laboratory studies.
  • Completes training for new assignments/tasks and any subsequent competency validation per the direction and procedures of the contracting employer.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • May supervise other laboratory personnel as assigned and qualified through task assignments, direction and evaluation of work completed.
  • Responds to emergency/disaster situations according to the policies and procedures of the contracting employer.
  • Runs quality-control tests according to contracting employer’s policy and procedure.
  • Interprets a variety of technical data (e.g. lab and diagnostic test results),.
  • Handles specimens from patients with a wide variety of diagnoses, conditions, and diseases.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the contracting employer who is also responsible for monitoring work in progress and reevaluating the status of the assigned work at the end of the shift/assignment.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
  • Experience as defined by the contracting employer.
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Technology program that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA); or training, education, and experience deemed appropriate by the contracting employer.
  • Additional certifications as required by the contracting employer. (Those with categorical certification only are restricted to the discipline in which they hold the categorical certification.)
  • Licensure as defined by state regulation or law and requirement of the contracting employer.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Effectively reads and communicates in the English language.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Meets applicable health requirements to provide patient care.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, including but not limited to the ability to manage stress appropriately, to make decisions under pressure, and to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to maintain and demonstrate professional behavior.
Working Conditions & Physical Effort:
  • Able to read and interpret technical instructions, visually and auditorially observe and assess the patient
  • Ability to frequently work in areas that are confined and/or crowded.
  • Ability to spend varying amounts of time sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Work is performed in clinics, schools, hospitals, nursing homes or other occupational settings.
  • Work environment involves frequent exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and/or potentially infectious or hazardous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Requires normal, correctable vision and hearing and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Sufficient endurance to perform the required physical and mental tasks over long periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity (eye-hand coordination) and fine motor function necessary to operate equipment.
  • Physical activity is medium and may require frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs.
