Job Description
Overview:
The Staff Accountant, Financial Reporting reports to and assists the Manager, Financial Reporting & Chart of Accounts with a variety of central financial reporting activities. The responsibilities of the position include the preparation of the University's bank reconciliations, preparation of monthly and year-end analyses and reports, support for the capital asset management process, and other various accounting duties. In order to carry out these responsibilities, the Staff Accountant is required to possess knowledge of accounting and bank processes.

In this capacity, the staff accountant will have these primary responsibilities:
  • Prepare the University's monthly bank reconciliations, working with Accounts Payable, Cashier, Payroll, and other departments to ensure accuracy and completeness of all bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, year end, and ad hoc reconciliations, analyses, and reports for various financial reporting functions.
  • Support Asset Management process, including accounting, reconciliation, rollforward and financial reporting of fixed assets.
  • Support General Ledger operational processes.
The successful performance of these responsibilities ensures that the University is able to maintain a full and accurate accounting of its financial information and is in compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.
Responsibilities:
Preparation of University bank reconciliations:
  • Research and clear account reconciling issues, and if necessary, prepare correcting entries
  • Provide guidance to F&T and University colleagues on various accounting matters
  • Collaborate with F&T and other University colleagues on resolution of reconciling items
  • Create and enter Prime and spreadsheet journals
  • Preparation of monthly and year-end analyses and reports in support of the University’s internal and external reporting requirements
  • Review account reconciliations with Financial Reporting Manager on a monthly basis
  • Establish and maintain account reconciliations and process documentation
  • Substantiate monthly balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare reconciliations of University bank accounts
Prepare monthly financial statement schedules:
  • Analyze accounts and financial statement categories and explain variances at mid-year and year-end
  • Prepare financial statement footnotes for annual audited financial statements
  • Support General Ledger operational processes, reconciliations and analytics
  • Collaborate with Finance Technology and other Controller Department personnel to develop and maintain system financial reports
    • Support Asset Management system and capitalization process, including accounting, reconciliation, rollforward and reporting of fixed assets
    • Creation of supporting schedules and journal entries in support of the University’s internal and external reporting requirements
    • Assistance with special projects in connection with the University’s accounting and reporting
    • Support General Ledger operational processes, reconciliations and analytics
  • Creation of supporting schedules and journal entries in support of the University’s internal and external reporting requirements
  • Assistance with special projects in connection with the University’s accounting and reporting
  • Prepare other reports in support of the University’s internal and external reporting requirements
  • Create schedules to support year-end accounting and prepare corresponding journal entries in accordance with year-end timeline
  • Determine process improvements needed for year end and other processes
  • Support Asset Management system and capitalization process, including accounting, reconciliation, rollforward and reporting of fixed assets
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP accounting and internal controls
  • Accounting experience with complex reconciliations
  • 4 to 6 years of accounting experience
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including advanced Excel functions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments, and balance multiple priories from multiple stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials and bank systems.
  • Experience in a Higher Education environment
