This role is responsible to direct, plan, lead, and analyze the outbound transportation for the assigned operating regions in coordination with overall Transportation initiatives. Maintains and ensures standardization for delivery operations, driver guidelines and productivity, and consistent processes. Provides continuous evaluation and optimization of the transportation fleet and maintenance requirements in the region. Partners with Fleet Safety to execute on fleet safety initiatives and overall DOT compliance.


The preferred work location for this role is the Norfolk, VA area. Travel up to 40-50% will be required.


Here's what you’ll do:

  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends and best Transportation practices; make recommendations to improve current programs and processes and to ensure company legal compliance.
  • Develop and monitor department budget for transportation equipment, labor, benefits, workman's compensation, and supplies. Reviews equipment specifications and requirements for various business segments. Sets and tracks departmental performance standards, improving driver productivity, developing performance expectations, and metrics.
  • Analyze fleet sizing and customer sourcing for area. Improve the utilization of the current assets and significantly impact the financial spend for required assets in the future.
  • Responsible for department management including staffing, training, performance management and career development of associates, and developing and monitoring department goals.
  • Manage application functions that control outbound routing, driver monitoring and tracking systems, including payroll, productivity reporting, and other IT systems.
  • Manage the assigned regional transportation fleet and oversee driver regulations to include DOT compliance, controlled freight, maintenance logs, accident review, drug testing, and fleet rental expense.
  • Develop and maintain economical and efficient private fleet and purchased transportation services including the garage facilities.
  • Accountable for standardized methodology in preventative maintenance and parts or supplies programs.
  • Adhere to and continually improve established customer service expectations and metrics while interacting with customers personally. Lead efforts to create enhanced routing that improves cube utilization and eliminate miles while supporting customer requirements.
  • Responsible for vendor evaluation, contract negotiation, on-going performance, and business reviews.
  • Develop strategies and tactics and improve efforts to assist customers and mitigate issues.
  • Maintain, develop, and implement regional company transportation safety, security, and risk management programs. Accountable for DOT compliance and accident investigation processes.
  • Maintain and build relationships with third party (outsourced) outbound transportation providers.
  • Maintain compliance to carrier's legal and operational requirements: DOT regulations, shipping documentation, weight agreements and carrier relationships.
  • Mentor and develop transportation management to operate within the company financial and strategic objectives.


Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ten years plus of progressive transportation, logistics and fleet management with eight years prior management experience. Union experience preferred but not required)
  • Practical experience with applications such as on-board systems such as OmniTracs, Transportation Management Systems (TMS) (McLeod experience preferred but not required), Outbound Network Modeling Tools (UPS Technologies - Road Net, Manugistics), Vehicle Communication and Tracking Systems, and PC Miler / Traffic Systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required) Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or other related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Masters Degree (Preferred)
  • Must be able to travel (approximately 40-50%).
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Proficient in MS Office (i.e., Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, prioritization, problem solving and analytical skills.

While performing the duties of this position, employees are subject to a warehouse environment and may frequently be exposed to changes in temperature and humidity based on assignment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Employees must be able to work weekends, holidays, days and night hours, and overtime as necessary and as assigned, and must be able to work in the condition specified for 8-10 hours shift as assigned. Travel requirements vary by assignment.
