Job Overview:

The Sr. Cloud Engineer works under minimal supervision and independently takes corrective actions to ensure cloud operations resiliency. They will leverage their extensive knowledge and expertise to improve or create new processes designed to measure system effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. They may also create processes intended to provide environment security, as well as automated processes to provide information on current specifications.

This role should also stay abreast of new technologies in the field and provides recommendations to organizational management on new solutions. This role could oversee the selection of orchestration tooling, as well as compliance audits and reporting. And they may be responsible for identifying, correcting, and enhancing important software tools. These professionals could also seek ways to enhance systems operations, with a focus on automation and minimizing cost.

In addition, this role supports and analyzes technical systems and issues in various areas of the enterprise. Provides analysis and oversight around application system, system optimization and resource utilization to support optimal service delivery. Establishes performance objectives to ensure service level agreements are met or exceeded. This role will have working experience in Cloud Operations, hybrid and on-premises systems and software.


Job Responsibilities:

Cloud Operations Engineering

  • Collaborate with product owners, developers, and support staff to ensure continuous and reliable delivery of service
  • Leads the management of designing, implementing and operating build and release automation (CICD)
  • Leads the review of cloud systems or technical services to identify risks, optimize opportunities and makes recommendations to leadership based on findings
  • Cloud Operations escalation point person
  • Leverages their extensive technical knowledge and expertise of Cloud Operations, cloud system administration, cloud configuration management, and cloud monitoring in the design, implementation, and operationalization of applications, systems, and processes to ensure cloud business readiness
  • Subject Matter Expert for IT Cloud Operations
  • Leads the investigation and solves problems across various hybrid systems and software applications
  • Oversees updates of operational support documentation relating to specific cloud applications or services
  • Establishes and executes monitoring processes and procedures of applications and holistic infrastructure to identify risks and trouble shoot problems
  • Independently designs and implements robust and maintainable cloud utilities and or automated processes for efficient cloud operations
  • Leads the management of cloud operational monitoring, metrics, and logging systems; Splunk, New Relic, Elastic, ELK, Stackdriver or similar

Training

  • Leads the creation of knowledge management and training resources of new features introduced into the cloud operational environment
  • Leads in the partnership with cross-functional teams to document knowledge on new system features and enhancements

Financial Support

  • Leads the gathering and organizing efforts of data and reporting of service utilization of AWS
  • Provides input for recommendations of new systems and software based on technical expertise and collaborates with cross-functional teams on reviewing cost models
  • Develops procedures, oversees, collaborates with cross-functional teams and implements costs allocation tags for AWS services.

Job Requirements

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline desired, or relevant Cloud Operations Engineering work experience
  • AWS Certifications (SysOps Administrator or Solution Architect)

Experience:

  • 4-6 years relevant work experience
  • Preferred work experience in retail or supply chain organizations
  • IT Cloud Operations practices
  • DevOps experience
  • AWS services and tool sets preferred

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Working knowledge and practical experience in system administration for Linux/Windows in a container focused environment
  • Exposure to source code repository tools (i.e. GitHub or GitLab)
  • Working knowledge and practical experience of SolarWinds, Splunk, New Relic, Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic or similar monitoring equivalent
  • Working knowledge and practical experience in Cloud Operations including managing cloud services, AWS required
  • Working knowledge and practical experience of ELK, Stackdriver or similar log aggregation equivalent
  • Ability to track project status and maintain substantive dialogue with many project managers, use of Jira desired
  • Strong interviewing, listening and observational skills used to identify and define business and technical needs
  • Experienced analytical and conceptual skills used to evaluate information from multiple sources
  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing business needs and leverage technology in support of the needs
  • Exposure to at least one Configuration and Infrastructure management tools like Terraform, Ansible, Chef
  • Interpersonal and collaboration skills
