Role Summary:
Rivian Design Studio seeks a Senior Clay Modeler to create and develop physical exterior and interior models capturing the creative designer’s vision through sketches, data, and verbal direction. The ideal candidate will have proven experience developing models in clay, foam, wood, and other materials while possessing complimentary skills in related model development activities such as paint, fabrication, electronics, 3D scanning, 3D printing, and/or milling. As a Senior Clay Modeler, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a talented team and leverage your diverse skillset to create future Rivian products that “Keep the World Adventurous Forever”.

Responsibilities:
The Clay Modeler is responsible for creating and developing three-dimensional exterior and interior clay models capturing the creative designer’s vision through sketches, data, and verbal direction.
  • Maintain inventory and procure tools and supplies using corporate procurement system
  • Accurately locate and secure models, parts, and molds to surface plates, tables, and other milling fixtures
  • Prepare physical properties for milling by applying clay, cutting and bonding foam, wood, plastics, metal and other materials
  • Work in a team environment and always be willing to help others
  • Finish and assemble clay and foam models with detailed components for informal and formal reviews
  • Adhere to all corporate health and safety procedures
  • Operate forklift and other heavy lifting and moving equipment
  • Work in a clean and organized manner, maintaining a professional environment in the studio and shops
  • Champion innovation through process improvement and search for new equipment and materials
  • Prep surfaces for the application of dinoc film and/or paint
  • Devise solutions to new problems while quickly adapting to and executing change
  • Create detailed components using a variety of materials such as clay, foam, metal, and wood
Qualifications:
  • Understanding of the design process and interaction of clay modeling, milling, scanning, and fabrication
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong technical and mechanical ability
  • Experience using metal and wood shop equipment and tools
  • Portfolio representing relevant projects and experience
  • Strong communication, multitasking, & inter-personal skills
  • Flexibility to work occasional non-standard hours to ensure time sensitive jobs are completed on time
  • Possess the ability to create and develop refined surface, forms, and graphics in clay and foam per design direction and engineering requirements
  • Strong leadership skills including the desire to mentor and coach
  • Computer skills (MS Office, Outlook, etc.
  • Excellent understanding of line, form, and surface development
  • Set of personal clay tools
  • Physical ability and stamina to bend, reach, push, lift objects, and stand for long periods of time
  • 7+ years of experience in exterior and interior clay modeling
Physical Requirements - Must be able to:
  • See, read, interpret documents, manuals, safety rules, as well as operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Talk/Hear and communicate using telephone and email
  • Sit or Stand for 8-12 hours per day.
  • Use hands/fingers to handle and feel material.
  • Lift and carry at least 25lbs.
  • Climb or balance including stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

Preferred Skills
  • Metal and Wood Fabrication
  • Show Car paint application and custom paint mixing experience
  • Experience operating 3D printers and scanning equipment
  • Soft Trim experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Ceramics, Sculpture or Clay Modeling Certificate
  • Understanding of electronics
  • Experience with composites
  • Experience operating CNC milling machines and creating cutter paths
  • Welding
  • Automotive mechanic
Pay Disclosure:
Salary Range for California Applicants: $135,000 – $175,000/yr (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
