Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Under limited supervision, operates a variety of large solid waste removal trucks and heavy equipment in collecting, transporting, and disposing of the university’s solid waste and recycling materials. Also has the responsibility of performing daily pre-trip inspection of assigned truck and assisting with bulk trash removal at university special events.
This position is considered and essential employee and is subject to 24/7 call-back for emergency and other operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Three years in the operation of solid waste vehicles over 30 tons gvw such as front end and roll off.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to operate a trash truck with a manual transmission and clutch is essential.
  • Must follow State of Maryland and federal vehicle/equipment rules and regulations.
  • Skill in operating assigned trucks and equipment and the ability to navigate/maneuver through small campus roadways and parking lots in close proximity to students and general campus population.
  • Thorough knowledge of the care and operating procedures of heavy duty (class 8) waste removal vehicles and associated equipment such as front loaders, and forklifts.
  • Ability to use discretionary judgment throughout work shift by making independent decisions regarding material loads and haul destinations.
  • Must know, understand and follow all F<, UM, DOT, OSHA and MOSH safety standards, and university and state procedures, practices and policies.
  • Working knowledge of the safe operating limits of such equipment and trucks, and of appropriate traffic regulations.
  • Ability to read and write; to use standard forms to enter required data for state reporting records; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to perform extensive walking, climbing and lifting; the ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds on occasion, required to wear and work in personal protective equipment; required to wear safety footwear.

  • This position requires an incumbent to possess and maintain a valid Maryland Commercial Class B Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsement codes. The CDL license requires incumbent to meet and maintain the conditions of the license, including DOT physical and random drug testing.

Experience operating heavy duty motorized equipment such as container carrier, bulldozers, heavy dump trucks, Gradalls or tractor trailers is desirable.

Physical Demands
Incumbent is considered an Essential employee and is subject to a 24-hour day, 7-day week span of operation. Duties are complex, requiring the incumbent to work in inclement weather and respond to campus emergency conditions. Will be required to provide coverage for special events such as but not limited to campus move in and move out, Maryland Day, and campus athletic events. Incumbent must have the physical ability to frequently enter and exit the truck during the work shift, to lift and carry bulk items and debris weighing 50-100 lbs, to stand and walk continuously, to bend/stoop for extended periods of time, to wear and work with personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.) and to work in a physically challenging environment (dirty, confined spaces, temperature extremes etc.)
Work hours after training period are Monday – Friday 5:00am to 1:30pm
