Software Team Manager 

Rochester, NY - US 

 

The Role: 

As the Software Team Manager, you will be responsible to lead our software development team in the design, development, and maintenance of embedded software solutions. As a Embedded Systems Software Manager you will oversee the entire software development life cycle, manage a team of software engineers, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality embedded software products. This role requires strong technical expertise in embedded systems, excellent leadership abilities, and a proven track record of successful software development projects. The software team consists of multiple small software teams that develop and deliver high-quality embedded software, running on a variety of platforms. Our development efforts span use cases such as computer vision and machine learning, robotic material handling automation, Low Earth Orbit Imaging, testing and measurement, electric motor control, and interactive entertainment systems. You will work collaboratively with Embedded Hardware Engineers, CAD experts, Product Management, and project stakeholders to provide solutions that meet the customer’s needs. 

 

This role is for a passionate person with demonstrated technical leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a team, and drive results in a fast-paced environment. If you love tinkering, enjoy designing innovative solutions to unique problems, and have expertise in embedded development this is your home. In this role, you will provide technical direction and leadership in areas including Embedded Linux, system design/integration, project planning, and debugging/troubleshooting. You will foster a collaborative and innovative work environment, promoting knowledge sharing and cross-team collaboration, and you will have fun! 

 

The Responsibilities: 

 

  • Lead and manage a team of embedded software engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and support throughout the software development life cycle. 
  • Define and drive the software development strategy, goals, and roadmaps in alignment with the company's overall objectives. 
  • Create, document, maintain, and train software development processes 
  • Manage the Software Team Budget: Overhead, Internal Research and Development, Training, and Capital Expenses. 
  • Set clear performance goals for the team and conduct regular performance evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and professional growth. 
  • Identify and implement new software frameworks, platforms (including software technologies) for the software team. 
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, and mentoring in the areas of embedded systems architecture, software design, coding standards, and development best practices. 
  • Manage hiring for the software team. 
  • Embedded processors running real-time operating systems or Embedded Linux on custom electronics.  
  • Coaching & mentoring less experienced engineers 

 

The Right Person Will Have: 

 

  • A minimum of five years of experience in a managerial or leadership role 
  • A minimum of ten years software engineering experience, embedded software a plus 
  • Excellent problem solving & troubleshooting skills 
  • Strong technical background in embedded systems, including experience with real-time operating systems, device drivers, and microcontrollers. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related fields or equivalent experience 
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a team, and drive results in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Experience in the full software development life cycle, from requirements gathering to deployment and maintenance. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. 
  • Solid understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and processes. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail. 
  • A self-driven personality and big-picture system-oriented approach 
  • Expertise in embedded software and firmware development, including proficiency in programming languages commonly used in embedded systems development, such as C, C++. 
  • The following things, which are highly desirable but not required: 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong familiarity with Linux 
  • Up to date experience with Embedded Linux platforms, configuration, board support package, and device tree 
  • Experience with embedded camera and video processing 
  • Experience with MIPI-CSI and similar SerDes protocols 
  • Experience writing or modifying kernel drivers 
  • Experience using GIT version control system
