PURPOSE OF POSITION
The primary purpose of the Companion Care Support Personnel is to focus on the safety of the patient and communicate safety needs to the nursing staff. Also, provides support to the patient care team, by performing direct patient care, under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Provides assistance, collects specimens, and performs limited tests per physician order according to established procedures and training.
QUALIFICATIONS
- AHA Healthcare Provider Training is required (BLS)
- Adheres to the hospital attendance policy and will make every effort to consistently be punctual when reporting to work and during daily activities.
- High School graduate
- Basic computer skills are required
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
- Performs activities of daily living including but not limited to:
- Supports other direct caregivers as needed, under the direction of a Registered Nurse
- Transfers to chair/log roll
- Ambulation
- Empties Foleys
- Oral care
- Positioning/turns/skin care
- Maintaining safety
- Incontinence
- Pass water
- Meal intake %
- Bedpans-toileting
- Catheter care
- Baths/showers
- Vital signs
- I&O’s and charting in Cerner
- Preventative foam dressing
- Heights and weights
- JP/NG drain care
- Feeds
- Answer call lights
- Ostomy care
- Documents care provided in Cerner.
- Assists patient with menu completion. Delivers nourishments to assigned patient; provides water, ice, and between meal dietary needs to patients; cleans/maintains patient refrigerator and updates refrigerator temperature log, as assigned.
- Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
- Places patient on monitor telemetry leads
- Complete house-wide mandatory education and maintains Basic Life Support Certification and any licensure if applicable.
- Maintains safety initiatives including but not limited to: hourly rounding, answering lights, monitoring patients who are a high risk for falls, and may be asked to provide 1:1 bedside companionship for patients as indicated.
- Collects specimens and obtains blood glucose according to established procedures and per physician orders and policy. Arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate.
- Conveys an attitude of understanding, trust, and compassion for individuals.
- Transports monitored and non-monitored assigned patients throughout all areas of the hospital as directed. Assists with patient transfers and discharges, including removal of equipment from patient rooms post-discharge.
- Makes beds and performs other special housekeeping duties as may be directed. Distributes clean linen and collect dirty linen.
- Commits to providing exceptional customer service to our patients and visitors. Commits to treating coworkers with respect and dignity and will follow our Non-negotiable Standards to promote a consistent positive experience for patients, employees and visitors.
- Cleans equipment/utility room and stocks rooms.
- Applies external devices (such as SCD's, Pulse Oximetry, TPump, etc.) per physician order.
SKILLS

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works under the direct supervision of an RN.
- May require exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment, such as risk of falls, strains, etc.
- Working hours vary according to departmental needs.
- Patient Care Technicians will be working weekend and holiday rotation and varied shifts per clinical unit area.
- Lunch periods will be assigned by the Charge RN.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
- Requires full range of body motion which may include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
WORKING CONDITION:
- Normally works four to eight hours per day as needed.
- Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff to maintain adequate companion coverage.
- Subject to frequent interruptions during performance of duties.
- Expected to fulfill position description requirements.
- Evidence of good health by infrequent absenteeism.
- Expected to fulfill physical requirements.
- Blood and body fluid exposure: Category 1.
QUALIFICATIONS:

3. Understands and adheres to policies and regulations.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide safe environment for patients.
2. Continuously monitor the patient while sitting in the room or from the remote video monitor system if applicable
3. Document on companion care flow sheet and report to nurse.
4. Monitor patient’s needs for toileting and nourishment and notify appropriate staff.
5. Redirect patient and engage in diversional activities.
6. Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) as directed by the plan of care within scope of practice.
7. Keep the room neat and orderly.
8. Clerical duties may be assigned if the patient is sleeping.
9. Qualified RN’s will follow the RN job description for major tasks, duties and responsibilities
10. Qualified PCT’s will follow the PCT job description for major tasks, duties and responsibilities
