Description


Responsible for performing FRA and UPRR required signal system testing. They lead in the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices.


Required Certifications


For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:


  • Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • Have valid driver's license


Medical Requirements


Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.

Accountabilities


  • Inspect signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for problems and defects
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions
  • Plan, organize, and track information and activities; Direct the work of others
  • Build and dismantle signal crossing warning device equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures
  • Maintain, repair, and replace signal communication circuitry, systems, and components
  • Responsible for digging holes and trenches for installation
  • Test signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for FRA reporting


Qualifications


Qualifications Required

  • Computer literate and have basic keyboarding computer skills
  • Able to effectively work independently and in group settings
  • Able to work with information in print or on a computer
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Able to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
  • Able to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate, organize, and record non-technical and technical information

  • Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s)


Preferred


  • Experience working with, on and around moving heavy equipment
  • Experience operating construction equipment such as a backhoe, trencher, crane, etc
  • Experience with railroad signaling
  • Knowledge in the electrical field that can be demonstrated by providing a work history incluing contacts and documentation of apprentice or jouneyman training or experience
  • Completed a formal electrical training program (e.g. training presented by a community college, trade/vocational school, or military)
  • Certificate in electricity or electronics or equivalent education
  • Experience working in an environment that requires you to wear personal protective equipment such as shock and arc flash clothing, safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats and hearing protection
  • An Associate's degree in electrical engineering or electronic technology or higher
  • Experience in construction

  • Able to occassionally walk, climb, and maintain balance on ladders, poles, and equipment in a safe manner

  • Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances

  • Work Conditions: Operate company vehicles and drive throughout geographic territory; Work with machines, tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Willingness to work outside regardless of weather conditions

  • Work at heights of 20 feet or more
  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

  • Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
