Job Summary
The eligible register developed from this posting may be used to fill future FT and PT vacancies within this classification.
Receive a $2000 Hiring Bonus in addition to great starting pay and benefits:
$500 bonus upon hire, $500 upon passing probation, and $1000 after two (2) years of service as a Sheriff's Deputy .
  • Please note that salary range listed is the hiring range. Experience will be considered in determining pay rate. Employee can earn up to Performance Maximum of $100,288 with good performance.**
Performs duties involving the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the County on an assigned shift or on special assignments including: Patrol, Investigations, Recreation (Boat/Snowmobile unit), Regional Drug Task Force, K9, Tactical Response Team, Negotiations Team, Drone Team, and Community Engagement. The work normally consists of routine patrol, investigation, and traffic regulation which may be performed in squads or on foot. In addition, the employee must have good communications oral and written communication skills. The work involves an element of personal danger, and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies.
Essential Duties
  • Prepares detailed written and electronic reports regarding incidents and activities that occur during a shift; maintains and keeps appropriate records related to investigations, ticketing, training, work with other agencies,
  • Patrols streets, roads, highways, waterways, and recreation trails throughout Scott County to ensure compliance with and enforcement of laws.
  • Issues citations, makes arrests, & takes prisoners to jail; processes prisoners.
  • Ensures the proper use and maintenance of law enforcement related equipment, including, cars, trucks, snowmobiles, boats, trailers, ATV's, haulers, computers, search and rescue apparatus, etc.
  • Investigates automobile accidents and crimes, gathering information and making detailed reports; assumes charge of major incident scenes until relieved, ascertains facts available at the scene, gathering, preserving, and processing evidence.
  • Investigates homicide, criminal sexual conduct, and other serious felony investigations; cultivates and uses Confidential Informants; coordinates with the BCA and other LE Agencies on large scale investigations.
  • Maintains fitness in order to perform physical tasks which at any time may include walking for extended periods, running in foot pursuits, climbing, jumping and dodging obstacles, lifting and carrying or dragging and pulling objects and people, pushing, bending and reaching, exerting varying degrees of force, using restraining and control devices or holds, using hands and feet for self-defense.
  • Manages budgets, grants/grant applications, and data entry and reporting of activities related to a specific program or program areas; provides input and documentation for the annual budget process.
  • Conducts residential and commercial premise surveys incorporating the principals of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design as well as other basic crime prevention techniques; conducts alcohol & tobacco compliance checks at local businesses.
  • Reacts quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergencies; responds to and assists in management and recovery during disasters - natural or man made.
  • Works the hours and/or shifts assigned and begins and ends work on time.
  • Provides case information and recommendations to the County Attorney's Office and Child Protection; conducts detailed Crime Scene evidence collection; works with the County Attorney's Office for trial preparation; logs and stores evidence to be used in criminal matters.
  • Creates, promotes, monitors and supervises community crime prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Operation ID, Business Watch, National Night Out, etc.
  • Organizes, conducts, and monitors search operations for missing/lost/abducted children and adults; searches for wanted or missing persons and property; assists other law enforcement personnel as required or requested.
  • Conducts forensics work on computers used in crime or may contain evidence; coordinate and make requests of the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in forensic area.
  • Attends meetings, forums, and events to educate the public about a variety of public safety issues as well as to have a presence within the community at community oriented events; plans and coordinates give-aways, booths, PowerPoints, presentations, and curriculum used to educate and inform others about law enforcement activities and public safety issues.
  • Answers emergency and complaint calls; interviews persons and attempts to make proper disposition; counsels in domestic or other disputes.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Serves warrants and court orders; prepares records and data for court processing; maintains discipline in courtroom; assists attorneys in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases; provides effective and credible testimony testifies in a court of law.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have completed skills, possess a valid driver's license, and be full time licensed or license eligible by the Minnesota POST Board by the closing date of the posting (6/13/2023).

Selection Process
Selection for this position will be based on a minimum qualifications screening and rating of training and experience. Top candidates will be invited to participate in additional assessments. Final selection will include: a background investigation, psychological evaluation, physical exam, drug testing, and approval by the County Board.
