The role:
Our Roadway Engineering Unit is recruiting for a senior urban design engineer! In this role, you will use your expertise to help develop and manage the designs of highway systems within the beautiful state of Oregon. You will work closely with state and national associations to help implement the latest research and advances in urban roadway design. A day in the life:
  • To request a copy of the position description, which includes all duties and working conditions, please email [email protected].
  • Serve as statewide expert in traffic calming techniques and context sensitive design including performance-based practical design.
  • Represent the agency on professional committees, American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) sub-committees and other national groups
  • Provide documentation and testimony as an expert witness for the agency or as requested by other agencies or the private sector.
  • Develop and implement training programs on methods, procedures, and theory in specialized engineering areas.
  • Research and develop new design concepts; evaluate innovative methods for application to agency projects and new engineering techniques, materials and/or processes.
  • Serve as advisor to management on complex issues involving roadway design, and operations in areas such as design standards, interchanges, roadway materials or features, or other specialized engineering areas.
  • Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available and occasional field trips throughout the state required.
  • Be an expert engineer for design crews and consultant engineers, providing guidance for unique and unusual engineering problems.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering AND three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.
Note: Three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience is considered licensed experience only. If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in Oregon within six months of hire.
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Highly developed professional engineering knowledge and extensive experience in roadway design.
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD and specialty design software like AutoTURN and TORUS.
  • Experience developing design guidance and policies.
