Location:

This is an office critical position. Candidates for this role will need to be in or around the Milwaukee, WI area and will be required to be on site and travel to site locations as needed.

About the role:

Reporting to the Deputy Projects Editor, the Family Handyman Senior Projects Builder/Editor is a highly organized team leader who is eager to translate their versatile building skills into an exciting new career in media. Overseeing a team of Studio Project Editors, the Senior Studio Projects Builder/Editor plans and executes a wide variety of DIY projects for content initiatives published across web, streaming TV, social media and print platforms.

About you:

From building a workbench or updating your kitchen with new cabinetry to installing a grill station or building a custom firepit in your backyard, you have the carpentry knowledge and skills that enable you to tackle a wide variety of DIY projects and home repairs. In fact, you are a Jack/Jill of all trades, with a wide breadth of knowledge about tools, building materials and what it takes to create or fix almost anything around your home, both indoors and outdoors. Ideally, you have experience working in the trades, on studio sets or on building crews. You never run out of ideas for fun and inspiring builds for people who love to DIY, and you love the idea of sharing your expertise with others, including our website and magazine audience and streaming channel viewers. You are comfortable being on camera for both still photos and video and you are a motivated leader who thrives on educating folks while entertaining them. You keep everyone on your team working smartly and collaboratively.

Your day-to-day:

• You create DIY content and lead others in doing the same, working closely with the Deputy Projects Editor and Content Director to meet our content needs
• You are a subject matter expert and a leader who works seamlessly with other leaders to ensure continued business growth, you mentor junior staff and actively contribute to our dynamic company and creative culture
• You work closely with the Deputy Projects Editor to ensure projects meet all deadlines, budgetary and content creation goals
• You serve as a senior-level leader focused on project content creation to feed all platforms (video, print, digital)
• You are focused on delivering high-quality project content to each distribution channel following all best practices for those channels

You have:

• Experience working for publications or with editorial teams is a plus
• A wealth of home improvement industry knowledge, including contacts with key manufacturers and insight into DIY and home improvement trends
• Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive relationships with peers and leadership
• Effective problem-solving and multitasking skills, and you can easily juggle multiple projects at the same time and work in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent interpersonal skills, highly collaborative and a positive change agent
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with decisive and direct style
• Experience with content production and management tools as plus
• 5-7 years of experience working in a building capacity, either via a skilled trade or through other relevant work experience
