We are currently looking for a Senior Structural Geologist to join our Mine Geology - Mapping team within Rio Tinto Kennecott. Based at our Bingham Canyon Mine in the Salt Lake City, you will be part of a team responsible for the collection and analysis of Structural Geology Data in-mine and for regional areas.
This role is a great opportunity to implement your technical and leadership skills while maintaining a high standard of safety during field and office work. This role will work closely with geotechnical and mining engineers, to provide recommendations and aide in daily mining operations and ensure communication is clear between departments and stakeholders.
Reporting to the Principal Mine Geologist, you will:
- Liaise with team members and stakeholders on structural geology and related risks.
- Demonstrate the Rio Tinto values of courage, care, and curiosity.
- Share knowledge and train the group in collection of geological data for structural assessment.
- Review and QAQC structural data collected through drilling.
- Set and comply with QAQC standards for geological data collection, analysis and interpretation.
- Provide safety leadership in promoting a safe and environmentally responsible working ethic, leading to an incident free workplace.
- Development of conceptual (structural/geological) models.
- Analyze, validate and interpret structural/geological datasets collected during field programs.
- Work closely with the modelling team to develop structural models.
- Plan and execute field mapping campaigns focused on the collection of structural data.
What you will bring
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Strong analytical skills for structural data including stereonet, OTV/ATV analysis, cross section and 3D interpretation creation, integration of multiple data types (ie. Geophysical, geochemical etc.) for identification of structural patterns, development of conceptual models and risk assessment.
- Knowledge of mining/mapping and modelling software packages (preferably LeapFrog, Minesight, Vulcan, MOVE, ArcMap, Dips and acQuire, DFN/fracture modelling).
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with employees at all levels and in all functions/ disciplines of the organization.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety. Experience of mapping in open pit mining environment is preferred.
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geology or Geological Engineering with practical experience in exploration, evaluation or mine geology, advanced degree with a structural focus is preferred.
- Good knowledge and experience of field mapping techniques is essential, Copper Porphyry experience is preferred.
