The Communications Division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society (NGS), while maintaining our place as one of the world’s most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. The Division’s creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, marketing, creative and media for the National Geographic Society and amplify this content on our own channels, across National Geographic/Disney outlets and through outside partners and earned media. The Division is composed of five integrated departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand and Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial.
The Content and Editorial Strategy team amplifies the mission and work of the Society across all owned and influenced National Geographic platforms through a centralized and controlled pipeline of narrative stories, editorial strategies, and impactful messaging. The team is responsible for managing collaboration across all Disney lines of business through our joint venture.
The Sr. Manager, Content Strategy is responsible for creating and identifying opportunities to execute the Society’s content strategy through National Geographic and Disney. They are responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day management of the relationship with Disney’s content channels and directing the coordination between other Society teams. This position fosters a deep understanding of both the Society’s work and Disney’s National Geographic content channels, using this knowledge to inform Society’s ongoing content strategy, designed to illuminate and protect the wonder of the world. They will also assist in the design and creation of pitch materials for Disney partners. This position also serves as a primary contact for editorial talent requests and pitches, working closely with Explorer Amplification and Program leads to identify the right candidates.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
Strategy and Development (30%)
  • Develop strategy for, and ensure execution of, content campaigns in support of Society projects and programs, aligning with NG Next goals and priorities.
Team, Organizational and Partner Collaboration (50%)
  • Creatively develop and package content ideas for Disney outlets based on the work of Society and Explorers. Translate work of Society teams into story opportunities for NG/Disney.
  • Lead Society responses to day-to-day editorial requests from all NG/Disney editorial leads – working with Explorer Amplification and Program leads to package content and talent, responding to requests, troubleshooting issues, and identifying new opportunities.
  • As a peer with Disney editorial/content staff, drive day-to-day execution of Society’s content strategy with Disney content leads. This role will need to work closely with Disney partners to understand their editorial needs, identify areas for NGS collaboration, and co-construct and execute on editorial projects. This role will pitch new content ideas, integrate talent and content into existing projects, leverage content to amplify Society goals, and collaborate on editorial projects.
Project Management (20%)
  • Supervise internal systems for capturing all content ideas, commitments, and opportunities across the Content & Editorial team. Develop calendaring tactics to highlight upcoming content needs and timelines in alignment with programs and projects.
  • Project manage and lead enterprise-wide campaigns including coordination of multiple Society teams, developing integrated communications plans, leading bi-weekly status meetings, and ensuring execution of the completed plan.
What You’ll Bring
Education
Bachelor's Degree preferred
Minimum Years Of Experience
7+ years of experience in the media and communications industry leading development of content, talent, and storytelling across multiple platforms.
Necessary Knowledge And Skills
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to execute on content development
  • Strong operational and editorial skills
  • Experience pitching projects and content ideas within a media setting
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead content strategy across multiple platforms
  • Strong project management skills

As a leading nonprofit organization, National Geographic Society offers competitive salary and total rewards to attract, develop, and retain an innovative and dynamic workforce.
The salary range for this position starts at $105,000.00
Job Designation
Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday.
