About The Position


The Senior Communications Officer position requires a skilled, multi-media communicator with strong knowledge of current events and Arizona politics to share board-related information with the public through statements, newsletters, press releases, editorials, social media, graphics, and more. Managing time and multiple projects for several individuals with sometimes differing interests is necessary. This position will report to the central Office of Communications but will spend a significant amount of time collaborating with board members and their staff. We Require


  • Three years of public relations, public information, journalism, or government relations experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Administration, or a closely related field
  • A combination of post-secondary education and job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis


We Also Value


  • Spanish language skills (both written and spoken) at an in-depth level and familiarity with the various socio-dialects of the language
  • Experience developing multimedia content using Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Experience publishing via a content management system and email marketing platform
  • Five years of public relations, public information, or journalism experience OR at least three years of government relations or political campaign experience
  • Experience developing engaging visual material for use on websites, newsletters, and printed collateral
  • Experience writing for elected officials or candidates
  • Experience working in the public sector


Job Contributions


  • Work closely with Communications Director and Deputy Director to ensure awareness of all board office communications and priorities in relation to overall county communications strategy
  • Write statements, press releases, and talking points for board members
  • Help compile and write content for district newsletters
  • Help coordinate media appearances and events for elected officials
  • Collaborate with elected leaders and staff to publicize county government work to constituents
  • Write long-form opinion or informational articles for publication in local or national media outlets
  • Assist board members with social media posts
  • Closely follow Arizona politics to understand how county/board priorities fit into the big picture
  • Update board member websites using a content management system (CMS) with minimal supervision
  • Create graphics in line with brand standards with minimal supervision


Working Conditions


  • Work occurs primarily in a business office environment, with occasional offsite work at various Maricopa County locations. Some remote work is possible. The position requires: periodically working early evenings, weekends, or holidays; travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles or private vehicles used on County business
