Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION:

Human Resources announces an opening for the position of Security Supervisor. This is a full-time, 260 days, 1st shift; Grade M-13 position located at the Department of Facilities and Operations.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (may not include all duties) *

Manages Arlington Public Schools’ physical and technical security technical staff and systems.

Ensures and maintains integration of all critical components of physical and technical security systems and programs, such as a visitor management system, video surveillance and monitoring, access control systems, key systems, fire alarm, critical notification systems, and emergency/security communication systems.

Oversees the reactive and preventative maintenance and use of division wide physical and technical security systems including but not limited to enterprise-wide video surveillance (CCTV) system (including physical building and vehicle cameras), access control systems (keys and card access devices), intrusion detection systems and equipment, security communication equipment, and other related security systems and equipment.

Maintains, assigns, and closes work orders that are appropriate to the team and regularly

communicates on work order status, needs, etc. Develops plans to minimize the potential for and impact of failures of the physical and technical security systems. This includes periodic tests, maintenance, calibration, and repairs necessary to keep the physical and technical security systems operational.

Assists in the planning and project management of future video surveillance, access control systems, intrusion detection, and other related physical and technical security systems.

Supervises, trains, mentors, and guides six direct reports in the department, including the recommendation of professional development opportunities and technical security certifications for staff.

Maintains rotating work schedules based off the operational needs of the department.

Collaborates with staff throughout the school division and with stakeholders outside the division with the direction of the Assistant Director, to implement and coordinate a comprehensive program of security and safety on APS property.

Represents the department and strives to be a leader in public school, safety, security, and emergency management and serves as the Assistant Director of Security as requested or needed.


EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of and skills in physical and technical security programs and operations to coordinate security and protection of thousands of people at dozens of geographically dispersed facilities.

Modern electronic security systems, including access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection devices, and key systems. The installation, maintenance, and integration of security, intrusion, fire detection/alarm, and closed-circuit television systems, including devices installed in buildings, school buses, and other school division property.

Visitor management practices, advanced reporting functionality and integration with other security products with intrusion detection, and critical notification systems.

Oral and written communication, including expressing information to diverse audiences so they will understand and, at times, be convinced or persuaded.

Interpersonal skills to interact with contacts in a businesslike, customer service-oriented manner by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and working in harmony with supervisors, staff, students and the general public.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects successfully with narrow timelines and limited resources.

Basic understanding of the practices and procedures in a public-school environment.

Computers and modern office suite software, and radio and telecommunications devices to conduct the essential functions.

Ability to implement regulation-driven practices regarding security and access control measures.

Select, organize, and logically process relevant information to address security situations.

When necessary, respond to emergency calls (including false alarms) throughout Arlington County and serve as needed in an event (from APS response team leader to member).

Rapidly acquire knowledge of the schools and other facilities of APS and related demographic and geographic information in sufficient breadth and depth to plan and coordinate security and emergency response.


QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field pertinent to the essential functions of the class (or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training) or appropriate combination of experience, education, or certification and at least five years of progressive supervision to include responsibility experience in physical security systems and technology or a related field.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Possession of valid vehicle operator's license required. Certification as an electronics technician or electronic security technician preferred. Credentials as a physical security professional or certified protection professional desired.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES: Work is intermittently sedentary and involves moderate physical effort. It requires moving about to obtain work objects up to 50 lbs, supplies, etc., distribute work products, coordinate with others and perform related functions; operating office and communications equipment, such as a computer and a telephone; and reviewing all kinds of written documents containing small print, symbols and special notations. Work requires physical strength, agility, dexterity, hand-eye-foot coordination, motor skills, and visual acuity and ability to distinguish color-coded wiring. Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity to perform all essential functions, which may include occasional use of hand tools and/or lifting and carrying objects. Duties require sitting, walking, kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending.

HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Work is performed primarily within school facilities and property. Employee may be exposed to climatic conditions, loud noises, vibrations, and potential physical hazards when operating tools and equipment. Employee is required to comply with safety policies and procedures. May be required to work unusual hours and be designated for 24-hour on-call service. The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Incumbents in this class are hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of

department.

Salary range of $28.37 to $51.23 per hour based upon 23/24 pay plan.

Newly hired employees with previous experience in their field may receive salary credit for up
to five years of experience related to the job being filled.
