Position Title: Security Officer
Reports To: Security Manager or Assistant Security Manager
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. (TZMI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of “Connecting, Caring, Advocating for Wildlife, People, and Wild Places.” A dynamic group of passionate individuals brings the zoo to life each day, 365 days per year, caring for animals, greeting guests, educating the public and managing the facilities. Each member of the team is integral to the success of the zoo as a key asset in the City of Tulsa and the Northeast Oklahoma region, delivering recreational opportunities, providing unplugged family time and conserving animal species for future generations.

Position Summary:
This position maintains a safe and secure environment for zoo guests, staff and animals by patrolling and monitoring premises, facilities and personnel. The zoo Security Officer strives to give the highest level of care and guest service in every interaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned in keeping with the mission of Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. (TZMI)
  • Provides assistance to customers, employees and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Watches for irregular or unusual conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards.
  • Warns violators of rule infractions, smoking or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Permits authorized persons to enter property and monitors entrances and exits.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment to provide security for zoo.
  • Acts as first responder in the case of zoo accidents, incidents and emergencies.
  • Sounds alarms or calls police or fire department in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Manages dangerous situations to assure the safety and protection of zoo property and personnel, occasionally including physical confrontation when necessary.
  • Performs security patrols of designated areas on foot or in vehicle.
  • Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position currently has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); at least two years of security, military or law enforcement experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees of TZMI and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money.
Computer Skills
Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Internet Browser(s)- Explorer, Chrome, Safari, etc.
Other Skills, Abilities or Qualifications
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Ability to operate radio or telephone equipment and/or console monitors. Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately. Must be willing and able to handle potentially difficult and dangerous situations, including the possibility of physical confrontation in a mature, respectful and safe manner. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable on TZMI’s insurance carrier.
