Position Summary Information

General Information
Become a valuable part of the James Madison University community! JMU’s IT Security Team is accepting applications for a qualified individual to fill the position of Security Manager. The Security Manager will lead a collaborative team of four security professionals that support the University’s IT security needs for all JMU students, faculty, and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the IT organization’s technical activities to implement and manage security infrastructure, provides status updates to management, and completes work assigned to the security team as a technical resource.
  • Translates the IT risk requirements and constraints of the business into technical control requirements and specifications. They must be able to provide leadership skills to manage a highly technical staff and lead team projects. They must also have technical security skills and be able to perform the work assigned to the security team.
  • Interacts with JMU employees, building strong relationships at all levels and across all business units and organizations.


* This position has the ability to work remotely within the United States. Occasional on-campus visits for pre-scheduled training and meetings, or incident response. *

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of Security Information Event Management (SIEM) systems.
  • Experience monitoring and analyzing the security of IT systems.
  • Understanding of information security concepts, protocols, industry best practices, and strategies.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with enterprise firewalls and VPN appliances.
  • Strong analytical skills to analyze security requirements and relate them to appropriate security controls.
  • Proficient with Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to recommend, design, and implement new technologies that improve security.
  • Ability to coordinate and/or assist with incident response and event handling needs as well as respond to occasional requests for IT Security assistance after standard work hours.
  • Experience providing leadership, guidance, and encouragement to the security team.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Project management skills and experience in creating and managing project plans, including budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Experience securing cloud applications and Microsoft O365.
  • Knowledge of and experience in developing and documenting security architecture and plans, including strategic, tactical and project plans.
  • Familiarity with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, including, but not limited to: FERPA, HIPAA, GLBA, PCI-DSS.
  • A bachelor’s degree in information systems is preferred; an M.B.A. or M.S. in information security is also preferred.
    • SANS, GSEC, CISSP, CEH or similar cybersecurity certifications desired.

  • A strong understanding of the business impact of security tools, technologies and policies.
  • Experience developing and maintaining policies, standards, and procedures as well as experience working with legal, audit and compliance staff.
  • Proficiency in performing risk, business impact, control and vulnerability assessments, and in defining treatment strategies.
  • Experience with common information security management frameworks, such as ISO 2700x, NIST SP 800 series.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
