Job Description
Banyan Global seeks gender consultants with sector-specific expertise, including in areas related to climate and democracy, human rights, and governance (DRG) among others, to research and develop briefs that are evidence-based snapshots of gender integration strategies. The snapshots will serve as resource materials for USAID staff when developing gender analysis recommendations and designing activities.

The consultancy supports an anticipated Work Order under the Gender Integration Technical Assistance (GITA) II Task Order which delivers technical services to USAID Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Hub (USAID/GenDev).

Banyan Global projects the first round of consultant engagement will be between May – August 2023 for developing snapshots on DRG and climate. Additional rounds are anticipated with consultants to develop snapshots for other sectors. Timelines are subject to need and agreed in coordination with Banyan Global and USAID/GenDev.

Consultants will develop one or more sector snapshots while working in close coordination with Banyan Global and USAID/GenDev throughout the process. Anticipated tasks include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Present Findings and Outline Snapshot The consultant will present the matrix to Banyan Global and USAID/GenDev and develop an outline for a sector-specific snapshot that is easily digestible and informative for non-gender specialists.
  • Draft Snapshot The consultant will draft the sector-specific snapshot, integrating feedback received during the presentation and on the outline.
  • Update and Finalize Snapshot The consultant will update the draft snapshot based on multiple rounds of feedback to reach a final product.
  • Update and Confirm Draft Methodology and Workplan The consultant will review and update a draft methodology for screening and categorizing the extent of existing evidence for gender integration strategies. The consultant will review and update a high-level workplan that outlines how the work will be conducted, dates to complete deliverables, and key decision points. Both the draft methodology and workplan will be reviewed, adjusted, and mutually agreed upon as needed throughout the period of performance.
  • Conduct Research and Develop Evidence Matrix The consultant will research and review global evidence-based materials related to gender integration in the assigned sector, considering the strength and limitations of the evidence. Data collection will include targeted desk research and may be supplemented by key informant interviews to verify the evidence base. The consultant will develop a matrix of approaches categorized by the level of evidence.

The responsibilities may evolve over the course of the assignment based on the needs and priorities of Banyan Global and USAID/GenDev.

Consultants will be selected for assignments based on their background and experience developing similar products. Expertise in gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) plus climate or DRG related areas will be prioritized in the first round. Banyan Global is seeking consultants with the following qualifications

  • Experience developing easy-to-understand informational materials, such as how-to-guides, templates, briefs, case studies, factsheets, etc. for diverse audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant field, such as gender studies, women’s studies, international development, or a related social science discipline, or Master’s degree with 8 years of experience.
  • Proven experience designing, leading, and conducting landscapes, assessments, or other research for development programming with a strong understanding of evidence-based approaches and methodologies (mixed methods approaches to quantitative and qualitative data sourcing). Research related to gender-based themes, including gender integration, preferred.
  • Solid understanding of GESI and DRG, climate, or other relevant sectors including key actors, policies, programs, and best practices.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills with the ability to synthesize information into clear and concise written or presented materials.
  • Communications or Knowledge Management background advantageous.
  • Familiarity with USAID, USAID/GenDev, and policies and procedures related to gender integration and/or gender equality and women’s empowerment programming preferred.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Google, and online communication tools.

Applicants must submit their application package, including cover letter, resume, and three references through Banyan Global’s career portal. Applicants are encouraged to include links to relevant work products within their cover letter or resume. Applicants with DRG and climate backgrounds are encouraged to apply by May 12, 2023, however applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis before and after that date. It is highly encouraged that applicants tailor their materials to highlight relevant experiences in the above listed task. Please no phone calls.
