Position Overview: The City of Altoona has multiple opportunities in the Parks, Streets and Utilities departments for the summer of 2023. These are seasonal positions that will work Monday through Friday from 7:30am until 4:00pm. The hourly wage for these seasonal positions is $15.00 per hour.

Day to Day Job Functions:

Parks Department:

· Maintain landscaping in order to beautify parks.

· Mow and trim parks and other city facilities.

· Assist and perform janitorial duties in park facilities.

Streets Department:

· Operate safely the maintenance and construction equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, dump trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, saws, welders, drill press, and other equipment as needed.

· Load and unloads heavy objects, materials and supplies as needed.

· Perform cement flat work, labor and finishing detail for various roadway, sidewalk and public works projects.

Utilities:

· Assist other personal as directed in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of the Municipal Utilities facilities, water distribution system, and sewer collection system.

· Record readings from meters, gauges, lab data, and related controls and equipment to maintain proper pumping rates, flows, and treatment processes.

· Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs of storm sewers, water mains, sanitary sewers, water treatment plants, waste water lift stations, pump stations, vehicles and equipment, including general cleaning, etc.

Qualifications:

• Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be 18 years of age.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

• May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed.
• Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
• During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud
• There is no residency requirement for this position.
• During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled workday.
• Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered.
