TVMDL is recruiting for a Scientist I to join our Molecular Diagnostics section in College Station. The ideal candidate will perform molecular diagnostic tests, possess strong leadership skills and assist the section leadership by performing oversight to section technicians.This is not a research position, but a role that will allow the employee to perform testing on diagnostic samples from both livestock and companion animals.
General Description
The Scientist I will perform molecular diagnostic tests and participate in the daily testing operations in the Molecular Diagnostics section, including operation of automated nucleic acid extraction systems (KingFisher) and real-time PCR instruments (AB 7500Fast). Assist in the oversight of testing performed by technicians. Assist with the review, finalization and releasing of cases from LIMS; assist section leadership (e.g. Assistant Section Head and/or Section Head) in reviewing and determining action on "hold" cases and problem cases; make decisions regarding sample set-up; answer telephone calls from clients requesting preliminary results and general testing information; communicate results and provide interpretation to appropriate individuals. Ensure implementation of quality control/assurance and safety in the laboratory which may include writing, reviewing, and revising SOPs and controlled documents, teach/train/mentor Technician(s) in diagnostic techniques, and identify and document/correct nonconforming work. Assists in implementing new/updated diagnostic capabilities.
Responsibilities
Sample Prep, Sample Cataloging
Oversee sample processing and preparation performed by Technicians, providing training and correction when necessary. May perform complex sample extraction and/or preparation techniques per kit inserts and SOPs. May assist with samples collected/cataloged for assay research and validation.
Testing
Participate in routine diagnostic testing, including filling in for technical staff when necessary. May coordinate daily workflow. Troubleshoot complex assay or instrument problems by recognizing sources of possible errors and implementing steps for resolution of errors or process improvements. Proficient in all tests run by the section. Participate in proficiency testing as part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and other regulatory bodies (e.g. National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP), etc.).
Data Entry, Interpretation, Results
May review and release results for tests performed by technicians. Interpret results that require complex subjective evaluation; review and make adjustments to observations and results when appropriate. May create new comments and tests, modify existing tests, etc. for updating in LIMS.
Client Communication
Communicate test results, interpretations, recommendations, and answer complex questions. Interact with clients in the identification and development of new assays to benefit TVMDL and its clients.
Quality Assurance & Safety
Lead by example in regard to quality assurance and safety activities amongst Technicians and Student Assistants. Assist in resolving issues of noncompliance and nonconformance. Assist section managers with audits and visits by external clientele and agencies. Responsible for safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals when relevant.
SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation
Assist in writing and/or editing SOPs for routine and complex procedures. May serve as a document manager for SOPs, procedures, forms or other documents related to section protocols.
Research, Reference Materials, Development
Participate in, and may lead, research and development efforts involving new assay development, validation, instrument configuration, and documentation of assay protocols to meet specific diagnostic testing needs of TVMDL and TVMDL clients.
Supplies, Stock, Inventory, Equipment
Responsible for ensuring instrumentation is calibrated, maintenance is performed and documented, and all technical aspects are in proper working order. Responsible for quality control monitoring of routine laboratory instruments and equipment, may include but not limited to thermal cyclers, real-time instruments (e.g. 7500Fast, etc.), thermometers, pipettes, eye wash stations, and balances. Ensure appropriate stocking and inventory for supplies, reagents and chemicals.
Administrative Duties
Coordinate paperwork associated with infectious agents identified and/or shipped from TVMDL. Serve as a liaison with other testing sections to resolve accessioning, sample, or other paperwork issues associated with diagnostic cases. May recommend, assist in drafting and aid in implementing laboratory policies and procedures.
Training & Mentorship
Assist in training Technicians in new methods, quality assurance, safety, or equipment methods.
Supervisory, Evaluation, Employee Support
Assist section leadership (e.g. Section Head and/or Assistant Section Head) in oversight of technical staff performing routine testing. May assist with job performance evaluations.
Teamwork & Cooperation
Collaborate with colleagues in other sections, TVMDL locations and other veterinary diagnostic laboratories across the country in development and pursuit of scientific advancement. Foster laboratory teamwork, cooperation, professional standards and communications. May participate in flex scheduling, including work prior to 8 AM, after 5 PM, on weekends or on holidays.
Other
Work shall be performed with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Perform work in such a way as to not expose others or myself to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods.
Position Details
  • This position may have access to equine or greyhound racing drug testing samples, records, and/or data and as such, the incumbent must have no financial interest in racehorses, racing greyhounds, or a racetrack, or any other conflict of interest within the racing industry. Furthermore, such employees shall have no investments in any racetrack nor receive any remuneration from a racetrack association, nor own or lease a racehorse or racing greyhound that is racing in the State of Texas. The incumbent may be required to consent to a background investigation through by the Texas Department of Public Safety including, but not limited to, fingerprinting of all TVMDL staff involved in drug testing for livestock and race animals.
  • This position is required to work onsite during normal business hours M-F 8 am to 5 pm.
  • TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for a number of “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned.
  • TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Two years of related experience
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Licensed Veterinary Technologist (LVT) or Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification
  • Experience implementing new molecular diagnostic tests, coordination of workflows, and demonstrated experience working as part of a team
  • 3-5 years’ experience in clinical or diagnostic laboratory work
