Position Summary


The Scientist, Biophysical Characterization will be responsible for development of biophysical characterization methods in support of sterile drug product development and commercialization. The selected candidate will be responsible for the execution and interpretation for biophysical characterization measurements and providing guidance to drug product development teams. This position requires collaborative interaction with multiple molecular characterization stakeholders across Product Development to ensure alignment and awareness of current network capabilities. The selected candidate will also learn other analytical techniques for biologic molecules while gaining experience with different matrix roles on a drug product development team.


Key Responsibilities


The Scientist will collaborate as an individual contributor within a sterile product project matrix team for multiple development candidates across BMS. The selected candidate will support drug product formulation and process development through the following responsibilities


  • Lead training efforts for basic characterization measurements (DLS, DSF, IF, DSC) while being responsible for the maintenance of functional area characterization instruments
  • Execute and provide interpretation for biophysical characterization measurements such as SLS for B22, SEC-MALS, FFF-MALS, CD, DLS for kD, SLS for micro-nephelometry, and/or Tm/Tagg measurements
  • Identify and implement innovation efforts leveraging emerging technologies/industry trends in the biophysical characterization space
  • Serve as an ambassador to other Product Development characterization stakeholders/collaborators to ensure alignment of characterization capabilities to overall network while developing collaborations/connectivity with subject matter experts in molecular modeling, mass spectrometry and NMR
  • Develop as a subject matter expert and offer strategic guidance, technical insights, and data interpretation to drug product development teams.
  • Gain proficiency with core analytical techniques for biologic molecules while gaining experience with different matrix roles on a drug product development team
  • Lead laboratory/technical workflows to ensure biophysical characterization workflows are leveraged where appropriate in asset development


Qualifications & Experience


  • Strong fundamental knowledge of protein structure and stability relations ships
  • Ability to execute and document scientific experiments and effectively communicate study results
  • Experience with various biophysical techniques including DLS, DSF, IF and DSC
  • Experience in running SEC or electrophoretic techniques preferred
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and strong desire to grow scientifically
  • PhD with 0-2 years industry experience or MS degree with 3-5 years industry experience in biophysical characterization
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with individuals and as part of cross-functional teams
