Title: School Nurse
Qualifications: The School Nurse must hold a current license as a registered professional
nurse in the State of Louisiana and have a minimum of two (2) years
experience as a registered nurse.
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: Students
Job Goal: The school nurse shall be responsible for helping students achieve and maintain maximal health, thus allowing the individual student to function to the best of his/her capabilities - physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially - by serving as an advocate for the student: promoting positive approaches to optimal health through counseling: identifying and remedying health problems; promoting understanding of chronic health problems and assisting the student, the family and school personnel in the location of appropriate resources for the remediation or modification of any conditions which adversely affect his/her well being.
Performance Responsibilities:
The nurse shall, in the area of
DOMAIN I. PLANNING
The School Nurse
1. Cooperates with school administration and faculty in formulating policies, standards
and objectives of the school health program.
DOMAIN II. OPERATIONAL DUTIES
The School Nurse
1. Maintains accurate health records and reports;
2. Works with allied agencies in providing medical services;
3. Develops and conducts programs of screening;
4. Conducts periodic health appraisals, evaluations, and maintains follow through on
individual students;
5. Provides appropriate medical and follow-up services;
6. Acts as health consultant and resource person;
7. Assesses environment of health and safety;
8. Implements policies for emergency care, first aid and administration of medication
in cooperation with medical and administrative personnel;
9. Acts as resource person for counseling with students regarding health career
opportunities; and
10. Provides health counseling and guidance to pupils, parents, and school personnel.
11. Shall examine children and investigate cases of head lice (genus pediculus) when
requested by administrators;
12. Participates in faculty meetings and serves on faculty committees; and
13. Performs such tasks as from time to time may be assigned by the Superintendent.
DOMAIN III. COMMUNITY RELATIONS
The School Nurse
1. Serves as liaison with parents, school and community;
2. Represents the school in health activities with professional organizations, civic
groups and community agencies;
3. Coordinates all facets of the school health program within the school program and
with the health program of the community; and
4. Adheres to Board policies and administrative rules and regulations.
DOMAIN IV. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
The School Nurse
1. Maintains on-going self-evaluation of professional skills and abilities;
2. Plans for own professional growth and continuing education;
3. Participates in professional, educational, and health associations; and
4. Participates in in-service training for professional growth.
DOMAIN V. EVALUATION
The School Nurse
1. Conducts an on-going evaluation of the school health program in terms of
accepted standards and changing needs.
DOMAIN VI: PROFESSIONALISM
1. The nurse grows and develops through professional development as assigned and voluntarily to improve teaching and learning.

- Represents the schools and district in a positive manner.

- Treats all stakeholders in a respectful and helpful manner.
- Minimizes bias in self and others and accepts responsibility for his/her own actions.
- Adheres to Lafourche Parish School Board employee dress code.
- Applies laws, policies, regulations, and procedures fairly, consistently, wisely, and compassionately.
- Develops and maintains a safe and caring environment for students.
- Adheres to ethical, legal and professional standards.
- Follows directives as assigned by supervisor.
- Adheres to Board policies and procedures and administrative rules, guidelines, and regulations.
- Refrains from revealing confidential information.
- Cooperates with administration in the performance of additional duties.
- Adheres to district guidelines relative to attendance. Regularly reports to work on time and works additional hours when deemed necessary.
- Develops leadership and responsibility in colleagues and students if applicable.
- Writes and speaks clearly and concisely for understanding.
- Completes tasks, reports, and documents accurately according to specified timelines and expectations.
- Uses proper administrative procedures for making requests and resolving conflicts.
- Maintains communication with immediate supervisor, keeping him/her informed of problems, concerns, and significant developments.
- Cooperates with building and district staff in planning and evaluation.
- Identifies problems and issues and works collaboratively to contribute ideas and find solutions.
**Domain VI denotes non-instructional indicators. Deficiencies in these areas shall not be subject to a plan of intensive assistance.
METHOD OF EVALUATION
The combination of the applicable measure of growth in student learning and the qualitative assessment of performance competencies and standards shall result in a composite score used to distinguish levels of overall effectiveness.
