JOB DEFINITION


The School Nurse assesses student health needs and communicates with parents regarding needs; makes referrals and monitors health care services for individual students; promotes the importance of health in the learning environment by counseling students, consulting with staff, and assisting in educating about health issues.

Essential Duties


Direct Nursing Services


  • Make home visits as appropri
  • Provide special procedures, or instruct others in their application, that are required by students with special needs.
  • Maintain a list of students with major health conditions and provide updates to the staff.
  • Provide current health and developmental information on students during the Student Study Team process.
  • Identify communicable diseases and refer to medical provider; conduct a program to prevent the spread of diseas
  • Provide health screening services (hearing, vision, scoliosis) and follow up on issues identifi
  • Monitor medications given at school.
  • Maintain health records on all students.
  • Respond to teacher concerns about student health issues.

Counselor/Advisor Duties


  • Identify and refer students who are drug or alcohol users or who are victims of child abuse and neglec
  • Provide crisis counseling to students, families and staff.
  • Provide individual health counseling to students and staff.
  • Work with students and families who have health related problems.


Planning and Coordinating Duties


  • Act as liaison between student, family, doctor, dentist, and teachers for major health problems.
  • Refer families to obtain home teachers for ill students.
  • Establish and maintain first aid policies and procedures.
  • Identify and eliminate health hazards and participate in the development of the school disaster pl
  • Refer students and their families to community resources.
  • Coordinate services for handicapped students and participate in student study team and IEP meetings.

Health Education Duties


  • Provide health related education programs for parents.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • Vision sufficient to read handwritten and printed materials, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
  • Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
  • Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps, and to respond to emergency situations

Education


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • A valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Californi
  • An appropriate California credential.
  • Current certification in CP
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Successful experience performing nursing services in a school, pediatric, or other applicable nursing environm
