POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is licensed by the State of Maryland through national examination for the practice of nursing. The RN is educationally prepared for competent practice at the beginning level upon graduation from an approved school of nursing. The RN’s experience, education, knowledge and abilities establish a level of competence. The RN uses specialized knowledge, judgment and skills as the basis for assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of the practice of nursing. The RN manages the direct patient care of an identified patient or group of patients. The RN assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for the delivery of all patient care. The RN may delegate the responsibility to perform nursing tasks to individuals on the healthcare team (LPN, PCT, NA) who are competent to perform these acts or tasks. When delegating to an unlicensed individual, the RN retains accountability for the nursing tasks. A RN is assigned charge responsibilities on a rotating basis, on each shift. Communications and collaboration are required within and outside the work group to provide patient care and resolve mutual issues. Communication and collaboration with external contacts is for the provision of on-going service and handling of routine transactions, frequently detailed information. Is responsible for ensuring that satisfaction and service to internal and external contacts is maintained.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

1. BSN is preferred for nurses hired prior to July 1, 2016.

2. All nurses hired after July 1, 2016 must:

  • Hold a BSN, or
  • Complete a BSN program within 4 years of their hire date with steady progress toward degree completion. Steady progress is defined as a minimum of 9 credits per calendar year from the time they begin course work. RNs who are not yet enrolled in a BSN program, must apply to and be accepted into a BSN program within six months of hire, with course work to begin promptly after acceptance.

3. Minimum of one (1) year of experience preferred.

4. Previous specialty clinical experience preferred for specialty units.

5. Clinical Nurse I (CN I) – a novice nurse who has completed nursing school and passed the NCLEX; is enrolled in the RN Fellowship program; automatic progression to CN II after 1 year of successful performance post- hire as CN I.

6. Clinical Nurse II (CN II) – level of entry for a newly hired experienced

7. Registered Nurse possessing at least one year of RN experience.

8. Clinical Nurse III (CN III) – voluntary advancement process upon review and approval of application portfolio.

9. Clinical Nurse IV (CN IV) – voluntary promotion process upon review and approval of application portfolio and successful interview.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

1. Current Maryland license as RN or licensure in a compact state that allows practice in Maryland. CPR required.

2. Must be able to pass all hospital competencies required for the position including but not limited to the following:

  • ACLS required for the following departments: Labor and Delivery (all current Labor and Delivery nurses are to be certified by 2022), ICU, ED, PACU, IMC (SCU), Short Stay (Observation Unit), Cardiac Catheterization (Interventional Cardiovascular lab), Endoscopy, Cardiac Rehab, Infusion Services Clinic, Pulmonary Function.
  • PALS required for the following departments: Pediatric ER, Pediatrics and PACU.
  • NRP required for the following departments: NICU and Labor and Delivery.
  • EFM required for the following departments: Nursery, Maternal Child Unit and Labor and Delivery.

3. New graduates and inexperienced transfers will have up to 18 months to obtain the appropriate certification. Experienced new hires must obtain the appropriate certification within the first year of employment.

4. National certification in applicable specialty preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Performs all duties in a manner that is consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

2. Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or the situation including initial and ongoing assessments.

3. Analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnosis or issues.

4. Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation.

5. Develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes.

6. Implements the identified plan.

7. Coordinates care delivery.

8. Participates in blood product retrieval and transport.

9. Employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment.

10. Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.

11. Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.

12. Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.

13. Evaluates one's own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations.

14. Interacts with, and contributes to, the professional development of peers and colleagues.

15. Collaborates with patient, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.

16. Integrates research findings into practice.

17. Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.

18. Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession.

19. Is responsible for delegating, observing, assessing and monitoring the flow of work for other employees supervised on the unit and follows up with feedback.

20. Responds immediately to life-threatening situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.

21. Initiates patient education plan according to individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by physician and/or hospital policy including patient and family instruction.

22. Performs all patient care treatments, which require RN licensure including, but not limited to, IV medications and performing blood transfusions.

23. Is responsible for complete and thorough documentation of patient care.
