Summary


The House Coordinator has the authority to supervise the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for an assigned shift in the absence of the clinical supervisor. The RN functions as the House Coordinator and has primary responsibility for nursing care in the Emergency Department at times of increased patient volume or acuity. The RN will have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, delegate and coordinate through effective leadership skills.


Education And Experience Requirements


Requires: Current MT RN License; experience working independently in an Emergency Department.


Current AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, TNCC, NRP, and ENPC or AHA PALS Certifications


Position Responsibilities

  • Makes appropriate independent decisions in the absence of established policies or procedures and promptly reports such occurrences to the immediate clinical supervisor.
  • Additional Functions
  • Helps formulate new policies and procedures.
  • Accepts responsibility for subordinates' adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Assesses the status of each patient care area frequently during the shift.
  • Demonstrates proactive behavior by recognizing potential patient problem and intervenes in a timely manner.
  • Supports nursing personnel and assists staff with clinical decisions and procedures.
  • Makes staff assignments at the beginning of each shift.
  • Coordinates breaks and maintains continuity in the level of care.
  • Effective in conflict management.
  • Makes rounds with physicians.
  • Provides clinical guidance, leadership, and direct supervision of the nursing staff.
  • Assists with adjustments within the time and attendance system.
  • Completes required shift documentation e.g., 8-hour portion of the daily census and staffing reports.
  • Accurately evaluates departmental needs and coordinates staffing within budget guidelines. Readjusts staffing as necessary.
  • Reviews and authorizes overtime appropriately.
  • Assesses staffing requirements and anticipates patient care needs based on census, acuity and staff expertise needed for quality patient care.
  • Appropriately assesses the availability of an RN for patient transfer after evaluating in-house staffing requirements.
  • Participates in patient care conferences.
  • Applies the clinical discipline of professional nursing through the nursing process.
  • Coordinates placement of patients upon admission, transfer and discharge. Maintains communication with the Care Manager.
  • Adheres to the standard of nursing practice and nursing objectives of the hospital.
  • Additional Functions:
  • Sets priorities and delivers care in a timely manner. Delegates responsibilities appropriately.
  • Collaborates with the clinical nursing staff and other clinical disciplines to evaluate the patient's response to the care plan and nursing intervention.
  • Interacts with physicians and implements the physicians' orders as directed.
  • Participates in patient teaching.
  • In all areas assists in implementing nursing care based on the care plan.
  • Follows protocol for initiating and maintaining IV therapy.
  • Demonstrates competence in delivery of nursing care in his/her assigned clinical area.
  • Takes responsibility for coordinating the response to an emergency situation, inclusive of the codes as defined in policy.
  • The RN successfully completes the performance standards inclusive of the yearly competencies, for each primary area.
  • Completes specific shift responsibilities.
  • Follows pharmacy protocol for securing and administering medications.
  • Maintains effective communication.
  • Strives to problem solve conflicts by using proper communication channels and the chain of command.
  • Keeps Acute Care Manager and nursing supervisors informed of significant clinical and staffing events.
  • Displays a courteous and receptive manner toward all other departments, medical staff, nursing personnel, visitors and outside agencies.
  • Assists and cooperates with the physicians to provide high quality patient care.
  • Assumes responsibilities delegated by the clinical supervisors and other duties as assigned.
  • Appropriately evaluates the need for activating emergency protocols i.e., the fire, disaster, and bomb threat plans and maintains competency in the Hospital Incident Command System.
  • Assists with the quality assurance program by identifying problem areas and participating in collecting and auditing data.
  • In absence of the Care Manager assumes additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Additional Functions
  • Effectively assists in the orientation of new employees when requested.
  • Provides feedback that assists with evaluation of the nursing staff.
  • Completes patient charges for area worked.
  • Completes incident reports and follows through with the reporting process.
  • Obtains patient consents and refusals.
  • Receives and transcribes the physicians' orders.
  • Documentation will be thorough, legible and completed within an appropriate time frame.
  • Writes clean, concise nursing notes that reflect implementation of, and the patients' response to the nursing care plan.
  • Completes appropriate documentation.
  • Reports defects and malfunctioning equipment to appropriate supervisor.
  • Assists with ambulation, repositioning and transferring patients using lifts, etc.
  • Ensures that restraint protocol is followed.
  • Provides patient safety and comfort measures.
  • Respects patients' rights to privacy and dignity.
  • Uses privacy curtains and covers patients appropriately.
  • Allows patient time to accomplish ADLs in their rehabilitative process to regain or maintain optimal level of functioning.
  • Maintains patient rooms in a clean and comfortable environment appropriate to the needs of the patient.
  • Allows patient choices: food, when to awaken, time of care, etc.

  • Reports any violation or suspected violation of this Code or other hospital policies or procedures to supervisor, Compliance Officer or through the compliance hotline. (EF)
  • Attends and/or completes mandatory training regarding organizational compliance. (EF)

Schedule Details


Please know schedules and shifts are subject to change based on patient care and department/organizational needs.


This role includes days and nights; rotating holidays. It includes being a resource nurse.
