Job Description

Position Summary:

Responsible for setting up and operating various types of respiratory care equipment to be utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases as ordered by physicians. As a member of the patient-focused care team, the Respiratory Therapist works collaboratively with the other members to assure the safe and accurate delivery of care. In addition, the Respiratory Therapist performs a range of technical procedures related to cardiopulmonary hemodynamics to comprehensively serve patient needs. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance.

Primary Duties:

  • Documents by exception and communicates to physicians and nurses all pertinent information.
  • Able to work independently, demonstrating respect for patient’s rights and confidentiality.
  • Documents required information and complies with all Point of Care quality control standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to use necessary patient equipment.
  • Assesses patient appropriately, interprets results accurately and suggests alternative treatment.
  • Involves patient and significant others in the care activities as a means of informing and teaching.
  • Performs Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedures.
  • Effectively and efficiently receives/interprets telephone and verbal orders and documents appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to react calmly and effectively in an emergency situation.
  • Administers medications according to hospital policy.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians, patients and co-workers.
  • Able to appropriately change modes of therapy.
  • This position is designated as a safety sensitive position because of the essential duties of the job involves critical medical care to patients. A lapse in attention to detail may constitute a threat to health or safety resulting in injury, illness or death. This position is required to work in a constant state of alertness in a safe manner.
  • Actively assists the physicians in the clinical management of patients.
  • Prioritizes work assignments efficiently.

Qualifications/Specifications:

  • Licensure/ Certification: Current state licensure (Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner) required. PALS certification required within six months of employment. BLS training required prior to completion of orientation; ACLS required within six months of employment. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) preferred. Active membership in the AARC (American Association of Respiratory Care) preferred. Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card.
  • Education: Graduate of an approved, accredited program recognized by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) required.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years acute care experience preferred.
Qualifications
