Organization Overview

For more than a century The Breathing Association has met the lung health needs of central Ohioans. As lung health issues are identified The Breathing Association creates and delivers programs to support the community and its most venerable and otherwise unserved members. Communicable respiratory diseases that impact the entire population, such as tuberculosis epidemic that led to our founding and the SARS and COVID epidemics more recently, are of utmost priority. Our Lung Health programs include the lung health clinic and mobile medical unit, and our outreach and tobacco cessation programs. In addition, The Breathing Association connects medically vulnerable, energy insecure residents with resources to help them remain warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Our vision Better Breathing for Better Lives makes it possible for central Ohioans to breathe easier.

Overview of Responsibilities

Reports to the Lung Health Clinic Director, the Pulmonary Health and Education Specialist focuses on implementing and coordinating a multi-level outreach for pulmonary health for the Franklin County Senior Options Program. In addition, overseeing the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program, re-certifications and continuing education applications.

Service Delivery and Accountability

The primary measures of accountability will be the attainment of the program goals and objectives as indicated by quarterly reports submitted to the grant administrator with Franklin County Senior Options. Obtaining and keeping records for reporting the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program, re-certifications, and continuing education applications.

Other criteria that may be used for assessment of job performance:

  • Accurate documentation of program evaluations and data reporting
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with grant officers, Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program patrons, The Breathing Association staff and other ancillary facilitators
  • Relevance of program activities/printed materials for the Franklin County Senior Options grant
  • Meeting monthly key performance indicators for both the Franklin Senior Options grant and Tobacco Treatment Specialist program
  • The soundness, timeliness, and accuracy of the quarterly reports for the Franklin County Senior Options grant and the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program

Essential Position Requirements

  • Develops, markets, implements, and coordinates, a multi-level outreach of pulmonary health for the Franklin County Senior Options grant.
  • Completes quarterly and annual grant proposals and reports, as scheduled.
  • Participates in on-going development and evaluation of the program goals and objectives, modifying as needed.
  • Conducts home visits and community education events for seniors in the community.
  • Market, implement, coordinate the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program.
  • Maintain student progress and his/her needs while attending the on-line Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program as well as maintaining certificate renewals, continuing education applications.

Qualifications

  • Possess initiative, energetic, and engaging presentation skills and good listening skills
  • Demonstrated organization, planning and time management skills.
  • Optimally will have experience in tobacco cessation efforts and hold a current certificate as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist.
  • Must enjoy working with seniors and enjoy working with diverse populations.
  • A minimum of 5 years clinical experience in a respiratory therapy position.
  • Experienced and familiar with common home medical equipment related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease such as home oxygen, nebulizers and, PAP equipment. Familiar with the use, care and maintenance of these items.
  • Well-developed communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and other data management systems.
  • Comfortable working interpedently in the community and a general knowledge of the city and various neighborhoods.
  • Hold a current State of Ohio Respiratory Therapist License.
  • Travel is required throughout the community.
  • Minimum of an associates degree in respiratory care.
  • Is flexible working with seniors and The Breathing Association staff.
