Job Description
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.
HCII is searching for a Research Associate who will work across two research projects, with faculty mentors Motahhare Eslami, Sarah Fox, Hong Shen, and Jason Hong. This is an excellent opportunity for a Research Associate to learn more about design research, technical, and behavioral approaches in HCII. For instance, one of the projects will involve evaluating different features of the users that relates to their potential in surfacing problematic behaviors and biases in algorithmic systems. The ideal candidate for this position will have some prior research experience in human-computer interaction.

Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination, or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect, and record results or observations.
  • Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • May program software in support of job functions. Attends project meetings.

Inclusion and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of diverse audiences. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
This is a great opportunity for someone to work in a creative, dedicated, driven team, in a collaborative environment committed to technical innovation, inclusion, and work-life balance.
Qualifications:
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • 1-3 years of research, lab, and data collection experience.
