Job Description

Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, performs experiments related to specific research projects and participates in other activities appropriate for carrying out research objectives. Reads and understands literature in the field. Conducts actual experiments and collects and analyzes data.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures that laboratory equipment is maintained and keeps maintenance records on equipment.
  • May assist in writing papers for publication and scientific presentations based on research performed, as well as annual reports and research proposals.
  • May work with radioactive isotopes for the analysis of molecules.
  • Operates sophisticated laboratory equipment to conduct research (such as high pressure liquid chromatography, centrifuges, computers, radioisotope counters, gel electrophoresis equipment, pH meters, balances, spectrophotometers, microscopes, gamma counters, infusion pumps, etc.).
  • Performs other related duties as required (such as routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory and laboratory equipment).
  • (Prepares reagents for appropriate assay of samples, including determination of the appropriate concentration of components of solutions and buffers.
  • Reports to PhD or MD researcher for the purpose of participating in specific experimental, scientific protocols.
  • Under supervision of the Principal Investigator or lab director, sets-up equipment and conducts experiments following established protocols and research methodology; gathers data for analysis and interpretation of test results.
  • Assays samples for analysis of peptides, proteins, DNA and RNA and other molecules.
  • Attends lab meetings with Principal Investigator or research supervisor to discuss data, its interpretation, new ideas, and the feasibility of proposed research.
  • Conducts critical analyses and evaluation of data generated on patients or from laboratory tests.
  • May perform various statistical analyses related to the data generated from an experiment.
  • Orders supplies for lab and determines schedule for experiments planned. Makes written progress reports and prepares summaries of data.
  • Completes, in a timely fashion, all required HFHS University or Research Administration mandated annual education.
  • Maintains a high quality record of all experimental results.
  • May develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives.
  • Performs various types of experimentation which may use animals and experimental models.
  • Keeps abreast of new techniques and reviews literature in the field pertinent to the area of research.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
  • Familiarity with statistical and research methodology is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related field to be familiar with research terminology and scientific techniques.
  • Minimum of up to 6 months of laboratory experience in a stated area of scientific specialty preferred.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Working experience in Africa and minority populations.
