Job Description
The Papers of James Madison documentary editing project at the University of Virginia is seeking a full-time research assistant whose duties will include: reading early 19th-century handwritten historical documents to ensure accurate transcriptions; researching and editing annotations, citations, copy, and indexes for accuracy and clarity; conducting on- and off-site research from primary and secondary sources; proofreading copy; providing clearly articulated written and verbal editorial feedback to colleagues; and working independently and collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in English or Communications or a related field required. Preference will be given to applicants with degrees in history, a foreign language, political science, and philosophy.
  • At least three years of experience required.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Superlative ability to pay attention to detail
  • Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work successfully and collegially in a small team and to learn new technical and editorial skills as required.
  • Fluency In the use of Microsoft Word, computers, and the Internet for research and communication
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual style ad editorial procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Preference may be given to applicants with education and experience in early American and world history, and with knowledge of language(s) other than English.
  • Extensive experience in research and editing
  • Ability to set and meet personal and project deadlines
