Job Description

To this end, the Research & Development Scientist provides scientific guidance and expertise in the field of nutrition science (including botanicals, vitamins and minerals) and dietary supplementation. They are responsible for: conducting in depth ingredient and product research to ensure the scientific evidence supports product safety and efficacy, guiding and producing compelling internal and external facing science-driven content, and establishing and documenting compliant product claims to support our efforts to deliver mission-aligned products to our consumers.


Essential Functions And Basic Tasks, Duties, And Responsibilities


  • Monitor industry for key regulatory changes that may affect Product Development and Marketing and report to key stakeholders.
  • Incorporate performance data learnings and SEO to inform the content structure, format, and overall strategy of content writing.
  • Practice regular continuous improvement through incremental adjustments to work, environment, and self.
  • Assist formulation team in conducting and compiling research for new product innovation and product refreshes, providing scientific analysis and technical validation and fortitude.
  • Review and provide technical and claims guidance on marketing and consumer-facing content to ensure accuracy and FDA/FTC compliance.
  • Support work on stability studies in New Product Development.
  • Research and manage claims substantiation files; oversee development of product monographs for new and existing products.
  • Assist in monitoring and classifying customer complaints using health and nutrition expertise.
  • Provide expert assistance in drafting responses to relevant health and product related consumer questions.
  • Assist in exploration and implementation of product pre-clinical or clinical studies, including study design, development and execution.
  • Create educational, scientifically driven content for internal and external trainings and administer trainings as assigned.
  • Evaluate safety and efficacy of proposed ingredients, formulas, and products to establish well-studied and substantiated product claims.
  • Monitor for NDIs in New Product Development, and oversee submissions as required.
  • Create compliant product labels and supplement facts panels including label updates; participate in final regulatory review.
  • Collaborate with quality/regulatory & external or legal counsel on issues around label compliance, marketing claims, NDIs, and other FTC/FDA matters pertaining to Product Development.
  • Research, develop, and write creative, science-driven educational content for multiple platforms, such as emails, blogs, product detail pages, social media, and video content – providing scientific foundation and applying regulatory and brand best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in a team that oversees the development of new products and product refreshes from discovery to commercialization, contributing scientific and technical insights that support human health.


Minimum Requirements


  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • A background check will be required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, listen, and comprehend English proficiently as to enable the safe and effective performance of the job


Education/Licensure/Certification


  • A combination of education and demonstrated, related work experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Advanced Degree (PhD, MS, ND, MD, etc.) in Naturopathic Medicine, Nutrition, Botany or Herbal Sciences, Pharmacognosy, Biochemistry or related field required.


Experience


  • 3-5 years minimum experience in R&D, educational and technical writing, and claims development and substantiation within the food, dietary supplement or pharmaceutical sciences field is required.


Skills


  • Strong knowledge in physiology and nutrition science.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge and experience with botanical ingredients are strongly preferred.
  • The experience, initiative, and resourcefulness to develop, carry out, and follow through on original action with minimal to no supervision.
  • Demonstrated skills in conducting scientific research by critical thinking, evaluation of existing research, study design, and analysis and interpretation of scientific data.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Prioritization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with valid research methodology and data analysis.
  • Recognition of the infinite value of employees independent of The Synergy Company or its business.
  • Ability to translate and communicate complex scientific principles to non-scientists
  • Critical thinking. and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated skills in critical analysis of scientific results, and translation of scientific results to claims.
  • Technical and educational writing.
  • Deep knowledge of FTC/FDA product claims regulations and industry precedents.


Travel


  • Local and national travel including to Company headquarters in Moab, Utah will be required for training and in-person collaboration. Also, all employees, whether assigned to work in-office or remotely, are required to be in Moab two to three days per year for Company all-hands development activities.
  • Additional travel may be required to facilitate onboarding.
  • Travel 1-2x per year to industry events/trade shows.


Salary Range


$75,000 - $80,000 per year


Work Schedule


  • Monday – Friday 8-hour day (8:30-5:30 pm with flexibility). Remote and hybrid work opportunity available.


Physical Requirements And Working Conditions


  • This role requires sitting for extended periods of time.
