Job Description
Function as an independent nurse clinician in coordinating ante partum fetal testing for high risk patients to include the performance, interpretation, and reporting of test results, assessment of patient status, educational needs, and follow up care. Assists with patients on the floor as needed in the absence of other staff. Provides education for staff and community and assists with research programs.


Perform ante partum fetal testing to include non-stress testing and contraction stress testing.


As needed, determine the technical adequacy of each test and independently assesses appropriateness of each patient’s testing based on established policies and protocols.


Recognize normal versus abnormal results; prepares accurate, readable report of the test; contact physician and/or patient when necessary.


As needed, correlates the patient’s clinical history with fetal monitoring results and recognized signs and symptoms of maternal/fetal compromise. Institute appropriate nursing actions for referral.


Assess and implement health education needs of patient to provide ongoing evaluation of necessary instructions.


Provide a holistic approach in the care of all patients.


Coordinate additional care for ante partum patients to include follow-up testing or procedures, scheduling, physician’s orders, and hospital admissions.


Assist with and maintain ongoing knowledge of billing and insurance protocols.


Provide education to other staff members regarding testing and care of high risk patients, act as a resource on ante partum fetal testing for the community.


Actively participate in research through data collection and development of ideas.


Act as a liaison (case management and care coordination) between patients and Maternal Fetal Medicine regarding patient’s care.


Serve as public relations representative to the community, including local community agencies for housing, utilities and specialty care.


Maintain clinical competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality patient care which includes validation of skill level by passing both verbal and written tests administered by Nursing Supervisor.


Promote the philosophy, goals and objectives of the School and the Department by becoming familiar with and complying with policies and procedures.


Contribute to the well-being of patients by serving as a positive role model and demonstrating a professional, caring attitude, and behavior towards co-workers, patients, and guests.


Triage calls (collecting information, providing advice/recommendations and documenting in the patient’s chart). If necessary, going to provider for advice/recommendations.


Provide clinical support to MA’s and LPN’s on floor as needed.


Attendance, as assigned, is essential to meeting required performance duties.


Complete other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


EDUCATION


Graduation from NLN Accredited School of Nursing with RN required, BSN preferred.


EXPERIENCE


Minimum one year experience with high-risk obstetric patients and minimum one year experience in fetal monitoring preferred. Must have a valid Virginia license as a Professional Registered Nurse.
