Description:

Position Title: Registered Dental Hygienist

Division/Location: Oral Health Services/ Dental Clinic

Reports To: Dental Director

Effective Date: 03.30.2021

Status: Part-time (20+ hours/week; hours may vary depending on operations) Non-Exempt

Full-time opportunity if able to travel two more than one CHP Health Center (hiring for Harvard, Kankakee and Aurora)


Primary Accountability:

Provides quality clinical and dental hygiene services, as well as oral health education, to patients of assigned clinic(s).



Primary Responsibilities:



1) Performs basic dental hygiene procedures as specified by the Illinois Dental Practice Act, including:

a) Using dental instruments to clean calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath gum margins to include prophylaxis, periodontal debridement and scaling and root planning.

b) Performing coronal polishing.

c) Placing dental sealants.

d) Palpating and visually examining patient’s extra-oral and intra-oral structures for abnormal conditions or signs of disease.

e) Charting normal conditions of teeth and surrounding structures and conditions of decay and disease in paper or electronic dental record (Dentrix) for diagnosis and treatment by dentist.

f) Palpating lymph nodes under patient's chin and neck to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer (Oral Cancer Screening).

g) Applying fluorides and other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay.

h) Using probes, examines gums to locate periodontal pockets, recessed gums and signs of periodontal disease.

i) Exposing, developing and mounting of conventional or exposure of digital radiographs (Dexis)

j) Removing excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth.

k) Making impressions for study casts.

l) Placing, carving, and finishing amalgam restorations upon successful completion on a training program approved by IDPR resulting in Certification.

m) Administering local anesthetic agents restorations upon successful completion on a training program approved by IDPR resulting in Certification.

n) Administering and monitoring nitrous oxide/oxygen upon successful completion on a training program approved by IDPR resulting in Certification.

o) Removing sutures and dressings.

p) Placing and removing rubber dams, matrices, and temporary restorations.

q) Documenting services in paper or electronic dental record (Dentrix) provided per CHP protocols.

r) Follows established CHP workflows.

2) Provides clinical services and dental health education to improve and maintain oral health of clinic patients.

3) Conducts dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of dentist.

4) Manages the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC and ADA standards.

5) Ability to work as a TEAM in the provision of oral health services.

6) Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:1) Requires more advanced organizational skills, in order to organize projects or the work of others.2) Position duties require the ability to work independently and as part of a team3) Duties requiring the ability to manage own duties and responsibilities on a fixed schedule without the need for direction or assistance in prioritization is required4) Ability to effectively select from both established alternatives and to modify approaches in response to situations encountered5) Employees focus is primarily on their own work.6) Duties require analysis of information following established methods, not requiring the employees own opinions.
Professional & Technical Knowledge• Possesses specific professional knowledge or business/industry acumen frequently acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree or RDH Degree from an accredited 2 - 4 year college or university.• Knowledge of principles, theories, and practice of dental hygiene including, but not limited to, the Illinois Dental Practice Act as well as OSHA, HIPAA, CDC, and ADA standards.• In addition to the functional knowledge, or the ability to exercise the skills learned during training (either formally or on the Position), employees in some Positions may have to use the knowledge in other ways.
Minimum of two years in community based programming desirable.
Licenses & Certifications:• Current licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist in the State of Illinois.• Certification in the Administration of Local Anesthesia preferred• Certification in the Administration and Monitoring of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen preferred• Valid Driver’s license and automobile insurance.• CPR certification within 90 days of employment and current certification thereafter.• Annual OSHA/HIPAA training in accordance with the CHP OSHA/HIPAA manual.• Annual TB test in accordance with CHP TB policy and procedures.• Hepatitis B vaccination/waiver in accordance with CHP Hepatitis B vaccination/waiver protocol. COVID-19 Vaccination or approved medical or religious waiver are required upon hire. Seasonal Influenza Vaccination or approved medical or religious waiver are required upon hire.
Communications Skills:1) Position duties require the employee to effectively communicate basic or non-technical information to co-workers and others.2) Employees are responsible for the resolution of conflicts that may arise because of disagreements between employees, between employees and customers/clients, or with the public, other legal entities or governmental authorities.3) Position duties require the effective communication of information in written (including electronic) correspondence.4) Duties require employees to effectively convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
Physical Demands:1) Work requires significant travel inconvenience, moderate weather exposure, or significant driving.2) Also significant exposure to risk due to the nature of work performed, and potential risk in the field, with groups, or in-home, typically mitigated by multiple staff present. Moderate patient risk even with controls in place (sharp objects, etc.).3) Physical requirements include long periods of sitting, some standing, and walking as well as considerable bending4) Must be able to lift 25 lbs or less5) Manual dexterity is required6) Must possess normal vision or correctible to within normal ranges.7) Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer monitor and or operating a keyboard.8) OSHA Category I Position Classification for occupational exposure to blood and other possibly infectious materials.
