Job Description
Position Title: Recreational Therapist
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Manager of Therapy

POSITION SUMMARY:
Promotes the use of recreation services as a treatment modality to improve physical, mental, emotional and/or social functioning and to assist patients in expressing independent leisure lifestyles. This is accomplished through the completion of individualized assessments, treatment planning and implementation, and discharge planning, including the provision of community resources. Develops and oversees REHAB’s Adaptive Sports Program.

MANAGEMENT OF PATIENT CARE FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS
  • Documents timely and appropriately, in compliance with insurance requirements and professional and REHAB standards.
  • Completes assessment of patients referred for services, within three days of physician order.
  • Collaborates with the treatment team, facilitates community assessments and outings, based on the patient’s individual needs.
  • Develops, implements and modifies treatment plans, as appropriate.
  • Uses appropriate equipment for personal and patient safety.
  • Involves patients and families in treatment plans.
  • Practices safety guidelines required for safe mobility, transfer, proper body mechanics in the delivery of patient care and performance of job duties.
  • Consults with and collaborates with other members of the team.
DISCHARGE PLANNING
  • Provides resources to patients and families for ongoing pursuit of leisure interests post discharge.
PROGRAM PLANNING
  • Arranges for diversional activities and/or entertainment for patients. Works in conjunction with the Marketing/Communications team to ensure hospital policies and procedures are followed (i.e., communications, photo releases, volunteer process, etc.).
  • Develops and implements new programs based on organizational priorities and patient needs. Collaborates with the Community Relations Manager on the development and oversight of support groups and peer mentorship programs.
  • Participates in the Creative Arts Program and hospital/community events and activities, and other therapeutic activities, as appropriate.
  • Monitors delegated programs and delegates duties of programs to others, as appropriate.
  • Develops, oversees and leads REHAB’s various recreational programs (i.e. Adaptive Sports Program).
  • Documents program outcomes (e.g., success, failure).
  • Delegates activities to volunteers and students, as appropriate. Provides instructions and monitors performance of activities.
  • Serves as the central resource for the development and implementation of strategies which are efficient, effective, timely, patient-centered, medically appropriate for an acute rehabilitation level of care, and supports appropriate financial reimbursement.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
  • Reports equipment that is out of order, secures equipment in designated area.
  • Follows and enforces Infection Control policies and procedures:
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, disaster plans and procedures.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies such as Code Blue, Fire or Disaster drills, Code Green, etc.

  • Uses appropriate equipment for personal and patient safety.
  • Performs patient safety goals established by the organization in the daily provision of patient care. Examples but not limited to: using two (2) patient identifiers in the performance of patient care; frequent rounds, observation and documentation of patients considered high risk, bedside report with the incoming shift for patient endorsement; equipment checks such as RN alert, call lights and other related patient care equipment.

  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment.

  • Offers recommendations to improve processes and/or operations of the department.
  • Maintains productivity; meets all departmental requests and assignments on a timely basis; effectively monitors and/or completes clinic schedules as needed.
  • Keeps abreast with current information via attending meeting/reading memorandums.
  • Participates effectively in marketing/sales to promote REHAB and clinics.
  • Understands the diversity of patient’s needs, and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide activities appropriate to the patient.

  • Accountable to start and end work based on designated work shift. Demonstrates flexibility with work schedule as needed. When appropriate, obtains approval from the supervisor for changes and/or variances.
  • Keeps current on acute REHAB services and RT issues.
  • Completes assignments within scheduled work hours.
  • Keeps self updated on hospital and unit announcements, including updated policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competence with technical skill review of procedures, treatments, and equipment usage.
  • Acts as a role model in the department and throughout the hospital, demonstrates approachability and willingness to tackle challenges.
  • Supports and promotes REHAB’s mission, as a positive role model, demonstrating a proactive approach to situations, and practicing REHAB values.
  • Interacts openly and professionally while supporting management directives and strategic objectives.
  • Complies with and updates yearly skills review per policy and timely completes requirements needed to maintain position and/or employment at REHAB.

  • Incorporates professionalism and demonstrates customer service in the daily delivery of care through positive communication and positive interpersonal relationship with internal and external customers.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
The population served includes individuals affected by stroke, orthopedic related conditions, brain and spinal cord injury, amputation, major multiple trauma, and other neurological and medical conditions. REHAB’s patients range from pre-teen to geriatric age ranges.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Licensure:
  • Current national certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist; or is eligible for and completes national certification within 18 months of date of hire.
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current State of Hawaii or out of state driver’s license.
  • Completion of competencies and other job-related and REHAB requirements.

Education:
  • Graduate from an accredited college, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation/Recreational Therapy (or emphasis/option in TR/RT).

Skills/Experience:
  • Highly independent, self-starter and self-motivated.
  • Work experience in physical rehabilitation.
  • Ability to safely provide care to patients.
  • Ability to safely and effectively manage patients’ mobility.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in, verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Experience:
  • Work experience in physical rehabilitation. Additional training includes wheelchair handling, transfers, and ambulation with assistive devices.
